Post by Dwarmaj Thu Mar 11, 2010 7:51 pm

After the rest the party decides to head south past the masks.

The party comes to a door which Thia easily unlocks. Listening doesn't reveal anything and the party opens the door.

You see a room with two doors to the leading south, one to the southeast and one to the southwest.

What does the party wish to do?

Check a little to the east to see if there's a door just out of view, also heading south. If there is, we should check and listen at both; the west one, then the east one.

Yes, there is a door to the east heading south and one to the west heading south. Listening at either reveals nothing.

    How do you proceed?

Neither door is locked and Thia doesn't detect any traps on the doors.

The hallways look narrow. I suspect they may lead to the same place, with the party's agreement, I say we open the west one first and have one or two party members near the east one to perhaps attack any enemies from a second direction. Candelos, Kaddim, and Miri to the West and maybe Sonya and Thia to the East?

The party opens the doors and see a room with two statues of orcs in the room. The orcs are posed with weapons drawn and raised. You watch them carefully for several seconds and don't see them move.

The room looks like it extends farther to the south from where Candelos is, but it gets too dark to see anything.
Sonya sees a wall to her south.

Kaddim sees a third statue, this one is a tiefling warrior and seems to be fighting the orcs.

To the south Kaddim can see a large ogre with a flail. He turns toward you and you notice that his face is badly scared and that he doesn't have eyes.
Kaddim has 3 move, a minor and standard action remaining.

    NPCs turn:

The orc statues move... I've marked the statues with green and red outlines.

    Green orc statue:
    Move: move adjacent to Sonya
Standard: attack Sonya with a slam attack
Slam 32 vs Ac hits for 11hp of damage

    Red orc statue:
    Move: move adjacent to Candelos

Kaddim gets an AoO 29-2 vs Ac hits for 13hp of damage. You notice that this attack did full damage.

Standard: no attack, but Candelos does notice that the orc statue coloration became lighter.

From the south Kaddim can see a robed archer move adjacent to the tiefling statue and shoot.

    Archer:
    Move: move north
    Standard: shoot Kaddim
    Longbow 22-2 vs Ac miss

From behind the cloaked archers hood Kaddim can see what looks like several small snakes...

Even though the red orc statue resisted the initial Booming Blade attack, I think it is still subject to the secondary damage when it moved and was vulnerable.

The red orc statue took 5hp of damage from Kaddim's Booming Blade attack when it moved. I've updated the token.

Note: those outside of the room can see into the room, barely... The orc statues block almost the entire doorway.

Any attack into the room from the outside will be at a -5 penalty. Attacking the orc statues is normal, no penalties.

No trouble at all... Twisted Evil

Since Sonya didn't open the door, the following actions would have changed.

    1. Thia would have moved first, them tried to HQ the ogre, then shoot. No change in the outcome.
    2. The green orc statue turn changes...
Standard: use Hit & Run on Kaddim 32 vs Ac hits for 11hp of damage. (This lets him move his speed and make one attack at any point. The target of the attack can't make an AoO).
Move: move adjacent to the east door to block it.

Net result Sonya +11hp, Kaddim -11hp and the east door is closed.

    Candelos turn them Sonya.

Since you guys slept on the stairs with the gargoyles, I'll give you a bonus to your monster knowledge check...

The statues seem to be some type of gargoyle. They don't have wings, but Kaddim did experiance an attack similar to their "fly by attack". You also know that when in stone form they have very high resistance, regenerate, and can sense creature moving around them.

    Sonya's turn...
I assume the door opens in...if I'm incorrect and the door opens out, I'll redo my turn.
Minor Action - Turn the door handle
Standard Action - Attempt to open the door, forcing the orc back. If this is a Bull Rush, I'll do it. If this is a strength check, that's fine too.
Move Action - depends on how I did opening the door.

    Sonya's turn:
Minor: turn the door handle (successful)
Standard: attempt a bull rush to push the gargoyle back
Bull Rush 15 vs Fort miss. Sonya was unable to push the gargoyle back.

Sonya has a move action remaining, then Kaddim's turn...

Can we tell when and if they are in stone form and when they are not?

Can I ready an attack for when they start to move with the assumption that they are not stone form when they are moving/attacking? When I say move I mean any body movement not just a move action.

Yes, if you can make a DC 15 passive perception check then you can see when they use an action to turn into stone form or revert to normal. (I've been hinting at this when I noted the color change to Candelos, but not to Kaddim...)

Otherwise you have to wait until you see movement which you can also ready an action for.

Sounds good! Normally Thia can make that perception check but there might be modifiers for distance and/or light conditions.

Looks like Thia is going to ready an attack then since she can't shoot past the orc without large penalties.

...does the handle stay in the "open" position? If I let go of the handle, does it return by itself to the "closed" position like modern doors? If the handle stays in the "open" position, I'll use my move action to back up 15' to give me a bonus on my Bull Rush for next turn.
If I think that there is No Bonus extended for having the handle turned while I do a Bull Rush, I'll also back up 15'.
If the handle springs back to the closed position when you let go, and that makes a big difference in the success of doing a Bull Rush on a creature on the other side of the door, I have little choice but to stay where I am. Been having a lot of trouble with doors during this adventure. I wonder how many rounds it would take to go to the north, east, south and then west to hit them from behind that way?

There's no bonus that I can find for a "running" Bull Rush.

I'd say that the doors behave like many of the "medieval" doors, once unlocked it remains unlocked until locked again.

There's no way through the "back door" that the party could find...

    Kaddim's turn... then the ogre
