Super Hero Campaign - Savage Worlds

Hello all, sorry for the delay in getting this posted but this is the official thread for the start of the Super Heroes Campaign set on a Steampunk version of Earth.  For those that don't know what Steampunk is it can be summed as retro futuristic.  A genre that takes retro aesthetics and makes modern technology with it.

I am going to create several replies to this thread to go over background / origin stories, the world, notable people, and some miscellaneous items.

Nova Industries is a gigantic corporation that specializes in advanced technology and cutting-edge research. They have many military contracts as well as a myriad number of patents and subsidiaries around the world. One of the primary focuses of Nova is the study and experimentation of Uraninite, the global method for power generation. Dr. Eva Van Der Meer is the lead scientist on the project and has recently made a giant leap forward in her experiments but she believes she is missing something crucial. With pressure from the Military leadership and Nova executives, she is forced to give a demonstration of her current progress. On the day of the demonstration, in 1966, something goes horribly wrong and a massive pulse of energy emanates from the experiment.

Everyone in the campaign will have had a reason to be near the facility on the day of the experiment. You can have a background from any profession reasonable that would be approximately 1 kilometer from the epicenter. The only exceptions will be the top levels of either Nova or the Military.

The campaign world is Earth but with some major differences. I'm going to put down my thoughts and if you have questions or when we clarify something I will try to come back here and update the post with relevant information.

Timeline
This Earth and our Earth diverged somewhere around the industrial revolution due to the arrival of mass quantities of Uraninite on Earth. For less complications for things like country borders the year is the current year and most major historical events happened just like they already have. Even though it is the current year one of the major differences in the technology timeline is that technology is currently at the same level as the late 1960s and because of the prevalence of Uraninite no one has done much with fossil fuels so rocket technology is very limited.

Power
In the mid nineteenth century, the Earth began being bombarded by numerous small meteorites of a special form of Uraninite. Uraninite is a uranium rich mineral/ore naturally found in the world but unlike the natural ores these meteorites contained a sizeable amount of boron carbide and a very dense core of uranium. All of the meteorites emit large amounts of heat that when submerged in liquids will produce sufficient steam to power all forms of electronics. Without the need for fossil fuels more research and development went into renewable energies like wind, solar, and of course steam.

Geography
The geography of Earth is mostly the same as our Earth with minute differences based on cities and special areas I have created.

Special Areas
Las Vegas - Las Vegas was created as normal in the desert but with the near limitless amount of power available and the go big or go home attitude Las Vegas was created as a floating city. For simplicity sake most of the strip and the old downtown area are floating and the rest of the city will either be underneath or around the outside of the floating city in roughly the same location.

Reykjanesbaer - Near the western edge of Iceland is the underwater city of Reykjanesbaer. A major disaster caused the peninsula to begin sinking into the sea. In an effort to save the city massive domes were created and connected to the mainland and Reykjavik. In game the city is much closer to Reykjavik and would have been considered a large part of the Reykjavik before it sank.

Vancouver BC - Not a lot of difference in geography but a large portion of their power comes from gigantic wind farms dotted around the city

London UK - Nicknamed Circle City there is a very large concentration of Uraninite right in the center of London. Building up and around the city like spokes in a wheel all power/industry comes from the center of the city.

What year does the accident take place?

The accident occurred early in 1966 and the current year is late 1967.

With that being said there are a few things that parallel Earth and a few discoveries that I want suppressed or at least very very small impact on the world. Things like LBJ is still president and the Vietnam war is ongoing but modern rocket science and jet engines aren't in use.
