The Library 2

Sounds like the party is going to rest first, not sure where the prisoner will be though...

...we'll rest first, at least a short rest and then decide what to do about the prisoner. We'll try for an extended rest. The library seems like a great defensive position. Sonya will suggest positions as follows, Thia elevated in the NW corner, giving her line of fire between both the NE and SW bookshelves. Quinn guarding the north door, Kaddim the south. Miri doing research. Sonya and Candelos as backup/ relief.

Sounds fine to me.

The party takes an extended rest, it takes several attempts to get the security arrangements correct...

The party has to rest while the thought eater (thoughtbow) is out of sight and tied up.


After the extended rest the party searches the rooms north of the library.

Room #1 (statue room)
This room contains a desk and a cabinet. The cabinet is locked, but Thia is easily able to unlock it and doesn't detect any traps. Between the desk and cabinet there are 14 books and 23 scrolls, all blank and non-magical.

Room #2 (north of the statue room)
This appears to be a storage room with several barrels and crates filled with salted meats, stale beer, dried fruit, hard bread, and a few bolts of cloth.

Room #3 (west of room #2)
This appears to be Karavakos bedroom. There is a bed in the northwest corner, a desk to the south, and a chest to the north.

There is nothing in or around the bed and the desk contains more blank books/scrolls.

Thia attempt to open the chest, but is unable to after twenty minutes.

Room #4 (west of the statue room)
This room contains the pillars, dome of a starry night, and glowing runes on the ground.

The runes look to be draconic, but no one in the party can read them.

...will Miri have an opportunity to make items during this rest?
If so, will it be the items that were attempted last time we tried and failed to take an extended rest?

Does Miri have a way to read the Draconic via a ritual?

Can three or so people assist Thia in checking the chest for traps and then also assist Thia in opening it? Sonya will step forward to help...

Yes, Miri can make three items during this rest period.

Miri does have Comprehend Languages, it'll cost 50gp to cast.


With help (lots of it...), she is able to open the chest which contains:
Ivory statue of an angle (similar to the statue in the front room, not magical) (250gp)
Silver necklace (250gp)
4 pieces of jade (100gp each)
800gp

Sure, Miri will create the 3 items (& fill her bag of holding with the most useful/valuable books in the library until the bag is full).

After the extended rest, since I think it might trigger an encounter, she'll cast the Comprehend Language ritual. If my arcana check is high enough to read it, we'll tell everyone what it says.

Miri casts Comprehend Languages.
Note: there were two things that needed translations...

1. The runes on the ground under the dome read:
"The key of knowledge shines beneath a ring of holy stars." (The stars in the dome do not form a ring.)

2. Karavakos' key (also in draconic).
"First in hardness, not in place."

The key seems to be made of adamantine.

Vyrellis will tell Candelos that she's never been off of the first level and has never seen the key before. The riddles may make more sense as we get closer to an exit.

The area north of the Mirrored Hallway has been described to the party by the quickling, but not investigated yet.

Area that looks fire:
Some type of creature is being held prisoner.

The area east of the "fire" area is very cold.

North of the "cold" room are stairs up.

Sonya will wonder aloud..."...why are all these books and scrolls blank?"
"I say we go back to the water room and then head south and then north toward the mirrored hall. If we suspect the fire room has a tough monster, we would then be in position to send a few of our party to hit the room from the east as the rest of us enter from the south."

Sonya will take a few of the blank books and scrolls and hold them open under the stars in the dome to see if the light from the stars causes words to appear.

Miri learned a while back...
Eaters of Knowledge (Thoughtbows, Mindstrikes, and Voidblades) feed off of written material making them blank. They also feed off of the memories of other creatures.

Sonya forgot that, maybe she was too near a knowledge eater....

Is the party going to split up to take the "fire room" from the east and south? If so who will be on each team and what marching order?

...Sonya will clairify that we don't split up until we've cleared the southern approach to the fire room. After the southern approach is clear, then a portion of the party will double back (through rooms that we would have just gone through, so low risk) and approach the fire room from the east.

Again, no splitting up until we know with a relative high degree of confidence that both approaches are clear.

The path up to the "fire room" is already cleared. No PC has been to the "cold room" though...

Oh, forgot to say congrats to Kaddim.

I think his power that teleported Karavakos in the beginning of the battle really saved the party.
