Brad, found this video of Donnie Yen w a 36" baton vs. Wu Jing w a dagger. It's a pretty cool fight sequence. I still don't think you could down an elk or a bear with one of these.

P.S. As part of his reward for making black belt, Kobe received a pair of real wood tonfas. I broke my padded foam 6' quarterstaff in weapon's class last friday and on Sunday night I cut it up some more and made a pair of padded tonfas. (e.g. I don't like getting hit with real wood tonfas.) Been sparring full speed with the kid, one person with one or two batons, the other with two tonfas, the kid isn't too good with the tonfas yet, but I do take a kick to the gut once in a while when he manages to hook my sticks up high...that's if I don't disarm him first...

...but how many of the 4 or 8 guys would be seriously wounded or dead? I mean really now, even though it is simulated with padded weapons and I've got to be at least slightly better than the average adult guy with a baton, I can't even match up against a 10 year old who I outweight by double and have longer reach, and be highly confident that I'd beat him and not take a serious hit. Not only that, even when I'm using the longer weapons, the match is close enough that I get hit (hard) once in a while.

No single blow is gonna stop a charging elk before it gores you or tramples you. Yeah, I'm getting pretty good at the "dodge to the side" and strike at the oblique angle but I've got to think that even a trained fighter is gonna hesitate before attacking a 600lb bear or a 1,500 lb elk or moose.

Maybe five really good "average" humans could down a 90 lb lone wolf with some confidence, but anything beyond that and you're at the bounds of what I think is real...

We're not comparing apples to apples at all. Your definition of "with some confidence", it sounds like you're talking about zero or near zero chance of any injury whatsoever. That's not my measuring stick. I'm looking at "with some confidence" to mean that regardless of the cost, the Bear or Elk will be dead at the end. That's a much easier bar to meet...

Anyway, I'm posting mainly to vent that I'm not the stick fighter I sometimes think I am. Last night I was working the (real) batons at a pretty good clip... and gave myself a shiner! Sad Hurt like a mother-...

I don't even need an opponent to get beat up! Crying or Very sad Evil or Very Mad

Yeah, I've hit myself in the head (and the arm pit and the groin and the leg) with my quarterstaff during class. I'm sure glad they're padded. Kobe tried a jumping move in class tonight where he jumps over his own staff and caught both his feet on his staff and slammed into the mat right on his nose. An 11 year old girl saw the move Kobe was trying to do and she tried it with her quarterstaff and did it. Kobe forced himself to get up and kept trying (after class he was eventually able to do it). ...And before you ask, no, I can't jump over my own quarterstaff while holding onto it with both hands and not letting go (I'm still working on the jump).
