It looks like WotC added item rarity to the Character Build. It won't let you purchase items that are deemed as rare. You can use the Add button, but not the Buy button.

Are we going to continue to allow PCs to buy any items or are we going to only allow non-rare items to be purchased?

Rare's are only supposed to be given away by the DM. All current magic items are automatically considered Uncommon according to all the designer's I've heard. The new Rare items are level labeled but considerably stronger.

So I'm for not allowing Rare items to be purchased. They should probably be major quest rewards.

...agree, rare items may not be purchased but must be gained on an adventure.

Rarity seems like a nice addition to the flavor of the game, but what are we going to do about players that don't have the Character Builder? Or an old pirated version that doesn't reflect this change?

If it's only newly added items, that's one thing, but are there formerly 'common' items that have upgraded to 'rare'? Some of us won't know what's off limits to buy...

Well according to the Character Builder we can only buy very basic items.

Magic +1, Magic +2, ...

Very few items with properties.

If its THAT many items, then a rule that would add value to items (a good thing), might be a case of "too much of a good thing". PCs can't get the builds they want as quickly, and GMs will have to pay a lot more attention to the 'Wish lists' thing that Stu started... I'll defer opinion on what we should do to those with the most updated versions to see what you all think.

Which items are you looking at Ken? My version is updated, and I see prices on everything.

I have the latest...

Everything has prices, but the Buy button is grey'd out as if you don't have enough money.

I made sure I have enough money, but the Character Builder no longer allows buying of most items.

Here's a thread on WotC:

Ah, okay. Wonder if there is a toggle in there somewhere. Be they will turn it on in the future.

There is an Auto Buy feature in the Character Builder now. It gives you a message prompt when you attempt to buy something.

Are the rare items you're mentioning in the Character Builder? If so, how will a player know which ones they are?

Are Item Sets considered rare or uncommon? I know Freeza has a couple of items from the "Gifts from the Queen" item set. Actually makes sense since he's in good with the queen...

No rare items have been released yet. The rare, uncommon and common rankings were announced at GenCon this year. Common items would be basic + items, Uncommon would be all current magic items that are out. Rare items would be kick ass items never before seen. Rare items would not be artifacts (which are one of a kind items), but they will be much more powerful for an item of that particular level. No word on what items sets might be. Although items in sets are really just standard items that do something with other items, so I don't think they will be Rare.

Oh that ROCKS!! Very Happy

Unless you find errata that says it's broken, that item has GM approval on it's name alone! Actually for this, in the Dragonborn campaign, any previous items, or items though 2 weekends from now when we play again, we can say any items you want and have money for were also gifts of Queen Monatore or King Komodo. All of the Royal Gaurd (all PCs as of last adventure), are 'in good with the Queen' ...and King! Smile

Dwarmaj wrote:Are Item Sets considered rare or uncommon?

I would think that would depend, just like items.
