Recap - 20101106 - The Dragon Wars! Slaying of the Orc King

So Freeza (Ken - Dragonborn Sorcerer), Shedar (Ross - Halfelf Warlock), Reptis (Trevor - Dragonborn Warlord), Rainin (Mick - Deva Avenger), Willas (Kevin - Human Warlock) and me, Nekk (Stuart - Human Fighter), were sent to over fly the enemy armies, find and slay the orc king. Rather than having us cleave through waves of orc soldiers, the King and Queen thought that if our group could slay the orc king, then the orc armies would be demoralized and perhaps fight with each other as various sides tried to decide who would be the next king. Sounded like a good plan to me, but because my flying dragon isn’t old enough yet, I rode crossbow for Rainin.

We passed over lots of fighting and there sure seemed to be a lot of orcs; lots more than the scouts and royalty were saying before. We then saw some women on horses running from a squadron of orc cavalry. Freeza thought that this situation was different somehow than all the rest of the battles we flew over so we decided to head on in. Rainin dove down while I took a couple shots with my dragon slaying longbow and then he took a sudden turn as we neared the ground and I fell off, good thing some hard rocks broke my fall. Not hurt too bad, I jumped up and hit the horse of the lead orc; the chain of my flail was plenty long enough to hit the orc, but the horse moved right in the way at the last second. Then the orc, with a hand axe, leaned over and took a swipe at me. Reptis saw the opening and yelled at me to take a swing, but again, at the last second, the horse moved his head right in the way and I hit the horse again! A huge lighting storm from Freeza hit many of the orcs and a couple other blasts of magic hit the one I was trying to swing at just at Rainin came in to decaffeinate the orc, err, I meant behead him.

That Shedar guy was blinking around a lot, blasting his magic but he kept cursing to himself that he was always behind. Willas and Freeza were flying around blasting with their magic and Reptis was jabbing here and there and watching the overall flow of battle; he reminded me of the generals back when I was in the Kern army. One of the women must have had some officer schooling because she kept spotting weak spots in the orc ranks. She turned out to be a princess and because all the horsemen were dead, she was thinking that the Willas fellow, the guy who Deslocke told me the group saved from an abandoned battlefield, might have a lot of potential. I told her that it’s "Warlock" not "Wedlock" but I don’t think she heard me cause she was busy telling us that her uncle was in trouble and not knowing where else to find the orc king, we decided to go where this woman, who we just met, told us her uncle might be.

A little while later, we swooped in on a whole platoon of orc archers. We crossed the ridge really quick at low elevation cause they didn’t fire at us until we were right close and I didn’t get a chance to fire at them. Rainin took us down the flank just as nearly all the orcs got hit with Freeza’s lighting blast, man that is one powerful dragon wizard or is it lizard? Heh…I told Rainin to ease up more slower this time and I got off better and knocked one orc silly. I was in the middle of the mix when Rainin and Reptis came to back me up. I used my shield to protect them from the arrows and we downed several of the orcs as the magic types came in behind us and to our left, blasting with their spells. This really big orc started attacking me and he was really tough! I knocked him on the ground with my shield and hit em in the side of the head, stunning him, but he still kept coming. While Reptis was backing me up, Rainin was taking out the other orcs. Willas was blasting at like double speed, trying to impress his new girlfriend but she gets hit once and he was screaming at Reptis to heal her, she wasn’t even fighting that I could see and she didn’t even look hurt too bad; I mean, it was only one or two arrows and they were grazing shots. So he stops blasting for a few seconds to go over and rub her wounds some to make it all better.

Rainin and Reptis worked together to attack the orc king from behind while I kept him busy by letting him hit me over and over again. He must not have been too smart cause he mostly kept trying to hit me even though I was the toughest to hit. Guess he never went to army school like me. Shedar made a smart move for us to block the door and after all the orcs were down cept the king, everyone else moved in and we finished him but he turned into gas and got away. Guess blocking the door didn't matter that much.

I was all like tired and stuff and everyone was ordering me to come on and chase the gas. Man, I thought, if they want some gas, they can eat some of my hardtack trail rations! I soldiered on, and even took point, I guess I have to be the scout too, and set off some kinda trap that Rainin and Shedar figured out how to get around by using the orc holy tokens. I finally got to catch my breath and they put me on point again.

These big grimlocks flanked us and a mind flayer tried to blast me from down the hall. I used my special focus training I learned in school and only thought of the swing of my weapon. Must have worked, cause the flayer only hit me one time! (e.g. the flayer only attacked Nekk one time after I used my daily to give my WIL defense a super boost!) Then this big steel golem attacked us and as usual old Nekk has the duty end of the enemy weapon. Rainin was not looking too good, he kinda looked for a second he was losing his mind, but he snapped outta it. The Willas guy must have been rattled a little cause he left the girl upstairs and when some of the grimlocks got in close, he blasted them but got hit in the exchange. The mage has got some guts, I’ll give him that at least. After blasting a lot of grimlocks, Freeza and Shadar used magic and got past the steel golem and started exchanging blasts with the flayer. Good thing too cause those flayers can be really tough. After I downed the golem, they sent the flayer into the pit but he didn’t fall. They blasted him a few more times and that seemed to do it.

Later, the mages told me that the pit was some kinda orc passage or something and it went all the way to the other side of the world. I didn’t know the world had more than one side. We took the crystal orc skull and they let me smash it with the big axe we found. The two dragonborn wanted to keep the skull for some reason so I let them, heck I didn’t want it. By breaking the skull, it sounded like the orc king would stay dead so we decided to head on back. When we got back, I bought some new armor, my old suit was really beat up from the orc king hitting it so much (345 hits worth). The Willas guy got a girl friend, Freeza and Reptis got in good with some other dragon borns, and Shedar and my buddy Rainin got some upgraded hardware like me. Rainin man, being on the flying mount and busting orcs was a ball, you can be my wingman anytime.

Captain Nekk (well, here I guess I'm Lord Nekk) reporting, Out.

I know we found enough gold for each of us to buy a 19th level item, but what was our pay for taking down an Orc King Lich?

    No, you can be mine!

I'm sure Shedar isn't the only materialistic guy in the group but yah where's our pay!

...I love "I rode crossbow for Rainin"

Post Script: Who had the Drakkensteed eggs from a couple adventures ago? I hope you can play next time...

...that's not military training, that's her feminine alure inspiring machismo from a potential suitor. <as 'Human Nobel' in MM2 + 'Mounted Combat' (many Horselord women are the same class...)>

Princess Aowin loves the speed of the Drakkensteeds and flying. <setting up the start of the next adventure, which I'm ready to run as soon as we can get a party together> They are ferocious mounts and their Dragon blood lives for a good and bloody kill. It's in their blood to seek a rider worthy and once bonded, understands it's rider's signals & speech and instinctively acts to it's rider's best advantage in combat. They have a specific ritual they instinctively know to determine a worthy rider...

Oh, and happening next adventure, every PC who got a Drakkensteed roll a nature check. The lowest half of the rolls are male, the top half of the checks are females and 50% chance they lay an egg. A high nature check reveals to the PCs that they can breed with any Dragon and lay hybrid Drakkensteed eggs. (Even, say, Dracoliches, as per the Draconomicron) The more powerful the mate, the more powerful the offspring Drakkensteed. With all the Dragons in the area, everyone's mounts are basically in heat...

Princess Aowin searched above and eventually did find her uncle, King Theodin, but too late, felled by necrotic and battleaxe damage.

Captain Nekk (well, here I guess I'm Lord Nekk) reporting, Out.

Everyone on the adventure found enough gold with King Obould's phylactery to purchase a 19th level item (next adventure (hopefully soon) is 17th, if you did not play, you can add any 18th level item when you update your PC). King Obould's battle axe is +4. Each 1/2 of the crystal skull is still worth 10k gp. As the Royal Guard, the PCs also enjoy all the luxuries of living in a brand new, posh, and fully attended palace.

King Komodo & Queen Monatore's battle did not go as well as the PCs. They drove Ember & Jafar away & freed the people of Corona Keep from his tyrannical rule, but they got away alive. They tell Freeza and Reptis that by divine decree their rule is only for a fixed duration after which a contest/ceremony appoints the second King of the Dragonborns. Jafar is laying low until then as all Dragonborns are welcome to compete for rule. All 3 of you have a strong support base within the citizenry.

Also, you find out that the old man you met a couple adventures ago was (surprise, surprise) a Gold Dragon. His childhood sweetheart he was looking for was the ancient Gold Dragon whose treasure hoarde funded the first King. As he is dying, as with his mate, he is leaving his horde for the 2nd King. (Jafar doesn't know this)

Post Script: The PCs discover "the Ionian Prophesies", which describes the 2nd King to have previously resided at Corona Keep, which is why Jafar went there, and quickly why all the buzz is for either Reptis, Freeza, or Jafar, for the 2nd King.

Nevin was one of the ones with an egg from 2 adventures ago. Go ahead and roll my nature check for me. If the roll is close then we can worry about his actual pluses but I don't believe he has it trained.
