After pulling the lever in the alcove of the Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl, you appear about fifty feet from the black Obsidian valves which bar the entrance to the Hall of Snurre the Fire Giant King. A short distance away, the group notices a cave with a hard to see entrance which seems like an ideal place to rest up. Although the smaller cave near the entrance is warm, moving fifty yards down a four foot wide, seven foot tall tunnel that slopes steeply downward, leads to a larger cave where it is very cool, less than sixty degrees. In the northwest corner of the deeper cave, there is a trickle of fresh water, allowing someone with a bowl or bottle to capture about a quart of fresh, but slightly sour tasting, water an hour. A wide, well trod path leads to a pair of great slabs of black stone, obsidian portals which give access to Snurre's Hall. Each valve is close to thirty feet tall, ten feet wide and at least three feet thick. There are no visible guards or other defenses. The desolate plain below seems most evil and drab. The sky is gray and filled with sooty clouds. A volcano can be seen rising up just a few miles away, and to the south a glowing river of molten lava moves sluggishly down a slope and out of sight. It is very hot, well over a hundred degrees in the open and the air smells of heated rock and metal. The ground is full of cinders and sharp rocks. You imagine the scene at night being lite by the lava river and the occasional flaming gases that shoot forth from the earth, creating an imposing red glow.
The pile of lava which houses the Hall of Snurre is a steeply rising hill, about three hundred feet high at the summit. It appears to be difficult to scale. Everywhere there are vents which smoke and some of these holes spurt out jets of flame from time to time. Any creature unlucky enough to be flying over one of the vents when it shoots a jet of flame more than a hundred feet high would be surely incinerated.
You feel a sense of dread as you gaze upon the imposing scene but you muster your courage when you remember that these giants are bringing death and ruin to dozens of villages and towns west of Istivin (the largest city state of Tyr Amar in the western region of the empire). You know you must venture forward and do what you can to disrupt the raids, concentrating on gathering whatever intelligence you can on who is planning the raids, why they are launching these attacks, and capturing or killing the giant leaders. Nosnta Chief of Hill Giants and Grugnir Jarl of Frost Giants have both already fallen to the arms of you and your companions, but you wonder if you are mighty enough to take on the legendary Snurre the Fire Giant King. You watch as a bead of sweat falls from your brow and nearly evaporates before it hits the ground.
