20200207 Against the Giants – The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl

Using the magical chain found in the dungeons in the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, the team teleports and arrives on the wind swept surface of a mountain glacier. Thinking that it may take more than one foray into the rift, the group sends the rogue to scout the caves in the cliff face behind them while the rest of the group heads down the main trail into the rift and then take the southern fork. After slowly traversing the trail, the group nears a pair of cave entrances and hear faint howling in the tunnels. With Pax leading the way, she is suddenly confronted by a huge white furry man. The armored warriors charge forward and are blasted by a chilling howl. The creature claws and bites at the fighters while Raistlen blasts away with spells. Suddenly five more creatures attack the group from behind, howling and shrieking (Thunder damage) as they surround the wizard. Soon, Raistlen is faced by five of the beasts while the three warriors and the ranger are fighting the initial one. Raistlen is grabbed but uses magic to teleport behind Souldun. The group recovers and soon Tin and Bannor each down one and engage a second. Pax combines fire, concentrating on whichever creature is most wounded and takes down one wounded by Bannor and a second one wounded by Tin. With the warlord holding back the remaining beasts, Raistlen uses missiles and fire to take down the last two.
After a short rest, the rogue catches up and the group continues deeper into the rift, passing by a misty cave as well as a cave where the group suspects a large cat like creature lives. The group locates what they think are a series of caves with Frost Giant warriors and by passes them. The group finds a cave with Hill Giants and leaves them alone and then a cave with Stone Giants which they negotiate with. After giving the five Stone Giants three fairly powerful magic items, the giant leader gives the party a potential path to the lower levels.
Following the directions of the Stone Giants, the team locates a Frost Giant guard post. The rogue is quite a bit ahead of the rest of the party and although the party yells to fall back and engage the giants in the narrow passage, the rogue dashes ahead. Pax fires a couple arrows into the lead giant’s chest and after three slashing strikes by the rogue, the first guard is down. The others decide to charge ahead anyway, so the remaining three giants can’t concentrate on the rogue. Tin and Bannor meet the second giant head long and Raistlen and Pax both fire their long range attacks at the same giant. Souldun tells the ranger to clear her eyes from a snowball and makes an opening for Tin to strike a powerful blow. Raistlen blasts the second giant and the defenders advance to pin the remaining two down. Souldun and Tin combine to put the third on ice and with Bannor occupying the last one, Ezio, Pax and Raistlen focus their efforts and finish off the guards.
After a short rest, the party rushes on and keep heading down hill. They enter a grand chamber and the rogue scouts a few dead ends. The group heads down the main tunnel and find a desolate cavern. They find some bones and what they think is a false map. The group heads into the far end of the desolate cavern and are attacked by a number of ice toads. A confused fight breaks out and toads breathing frost, tripping people, and pulling the lighter members of the party in close with their tongues. Ezio takes one toad down almost immediately, as does Tin with the help of Souldun. Bannor slices up a third toad and a few arrows from the ranger finish that one off. Flanking with the fighter, Ezio takes out his second toad and again with Souldun’s help, Tin takes out his second toad. After teleporting away from being grabbed, Raistlen finishes off the last toad.
Retracing their steps back to the entry chamber, using the wizard’s magic, the group sees two guard Frost Giants and a large horn. Bannor and Souldun move the boulder that blocks the entrance and Raistlen teleports right next to the horn. The rogue tumbles past the guard at the entrance to strike the giant from behind. Pax adds two arrows and Bannor slicing him down as he turns to chop at the rogue. The second giant grabs the horn and blinds the ranger with a snowball. Souldun runs forward and with an extra effort wrestles the horn out of giant’s hands! Tin runs up and stabs at the giant just as the rogue shifts into flanking position. Pax scores a solid hit and as the second guard rears back from the arrow, Bannor buries his axe into the giant’s chest, ending the quick fight.
