Ross, Chris, Brad, what did you guys think of the 5.0 mechanics? Chris, what did your boys think? Mechanics aside, I thought it was funny that Ross was playing the Thief, Brad was playing the Fighter (that missed), I was healing people (uh...w only two spells for the whole adventure!), and Chris was the arcane caster... seemed a lot like a game here at my place. I think this is a "Must Do" event next year too!

Boys didn't think too much of it, they just enjoyed playing. They loved getting their own set of dice and a dice bag.
For the wizard the mechanics are very similar to 3.5 but with a bit of the good from 4.0 in there. I get a spell book and get to place any of my known spells in any of the slots I have like the sorcerer did in 3.5. I also had "cantrips" which are very much like at wills in 4.0 as there were two that could damage. I don't know how effective those would be at higher levels but at low level they were fine. Magic Missile is again a beast again as 3D4+3 is very good at 1st. 6-15 is a very nice range when even fighters only had 14 hit points.
Advantage didn't really play that big of a part as we never used it nor did the DM but by the same token neither did disadvantage.
Other than that I would say that it is same old same old. Just the nuances were slightly different.
