Wireless Network Troubles, Help!!

Okay, the new wireless home internet was working fine before soccer practice. After I got home, nothing would work.

The wireless adapter is seeing the wireless transmitter which is hooked to the ComCast broadband cable modem, however I'm only getting a "limited" connection where the computer is not seeing a DNS. I have the assignment of a DNS set to "auto", but DLINK is still not making the assignment for some reason.

I'm getting an IP address automatically assigned, but it is not the one I'm expecting. I'm expecting 192.168.0.1X where 192.168.0.1 is the transmitter/ router but that's not what I'm getting. Help...

Try repair connection. Should be a wireless computer symbol in your bottom right tray. Right click it and select Repair.

If that doesn't work try these things:
A) try connecting the computer directly to the router using a cable.
B) If that doesn't work make sure your modem is working. Try connecting the modem directly to the computer and see if you can get onto the internet, bypassing the router.

When I first turned on wireless for you it worked for my laptop, but ever since I've never been able to connect to your network. Next time I'm over I'll try again, or maybe Ken can take a look since he's much closer to you than I am.

...yep, tried "Repair Connection" and that action "Cannot be Completed" for some reason.
...I can't hook the computer directly to the cable modem to bypass the router as the computer is upstairs and the modem is downstairs. To confirm if the modem is working I'll bring my work laptop home and see if I can get the internet on that. The green lights on the front of the router and the front of the modem seem to indicate that the modem and router are working...

Have you tried reseting the router?
There's usually a reset button on the back you have to hold down.
And sometime turning off the power for a few sec resets things.

I agree with Mick; try the following.

Turn off the computers
Turn off the router
Turn off the cable modem
Wait 1 minute

Turn on the cable modem, wait for all the lights to turn on and signify connectivity to the internet.
Turn on the router, wait for all the lights to turn on and show connectivity to the modem
Turn on the computers and try the connections.

I'm very reluctant to reset the router to factory defaults because the CD that came with the router that has the Config Wizard is wrong. The only way I could config the router correctly was to go to the internet and configuring it there. In my current situation, I'd have to recreate what I did to originally config the router; i.e. uninstall the cable modem from downstairs, move the cable modem upstairs and run an extra long coax cable across the floor of the computer room and direct connect my PC with 10/100 cable to the modem. Config the router via a direct internet connection and then unconnect everything and move the modem back downstairs and reconnect it. That effort took me about 10 hours last Friday and Saturday.

That shouldn't reset to factory defaults.

Yes, cycling power will not reset the router to factory defaults. There is a little button on the back of the router that will reset it to factory defaults and require me to reconfig the router. That's the button I don't want to push unless I really have to.

I would have thrown it out a window after 5 hrs.

yeah, getting the darn wireless network up and running is really cutting into my BF2 time...

Mick, Chris, that was it man. Cycled power on everything (modem, router, PC's) and then turned them back on Modem, Router, PC and I'm working again. Thanks! Didn't have to reset the router to factory defaults, yeah!

It is sad but the number one troubleshooting tip is to restart it. Manufacturer's have built in startup routines that take care of a lot of problems.

I assumed you did that already, since that is the default fix for just about any electronic item that's malfunctioning.
