Recap 20180907 – Searching for Scour

Alyce (Halfling Warlock / Bard – Steve), Souldun (Human Warlord – Vic), Gird (Human Monk – Art), Raistlin (Half Elf Wizard – Arthur) and Kazoo (Halfling Kender Druid Rogue – Ross) find themselves serving Baron William Bruce, checking into some trouble in Tyr Amar, seeing if they can capture Brother Scour of the Raven Queen. During the briefing, the Baron gives the group a few vials of oil that help fight undead creatures. Also, during the briefing, Alyce and Raistin feel an evil presence scrying the group.
After meeting a few military scouts, some refugees, and a certain old man, Gird spots a high flying shadow and everyone except Kazoo dives for cover. Kazoo waves at the dragon and greets it, but it flies on. The group chooses to travel on through the night. Again the arcane trained heroes feel an intrusive presence. While nearing a ruined building complex near the side of the road, the group is confronted by a large lizard and a mangy lizard-man. Within seconds, our five heroes are faced with three Wraith Wolves, and a second Wight Lizards. Raistlin backs up to the water’s edge and is surprised by several more lizard man wights who emerge from the river. Alyce immediately incinerates one of them with a blast of radiant energy. Raistlin follows suit downing three more with a hail of magic missiles. The remainder of the heroes take on a huge lizard in the north, three wolves from the west and one lizard in the south. Gird rushes right at the northern lizard and it breaths a blast of negative energy on the monk and warlord. The southern lizard breaths on the bard and the wizard. Kazoo is off in the west, fighting a wolf six times his size, one on one. The northern lizard nearly snaps the monk in two, but Gird is saved by a flash of energy from the bard that disrupts the lizard’s attack. As the battle swirls about the bridge landing, Raistlin is able to blast with a fireball and envelops several of the monsters, downing one wolf. Aided by one vial of magic oil, Kazoo beats off the second wolf and moves toward the southern lizard. Souldun inspires Gird and the recharged monk, also aided by a vial of magic oil, downs the last lizard man wight. With the number of undead reduced, the group is able to concentrate on the southern lizard and the remaining wolf. Souldun strikes a solid blow and teams with Gird to strike down the last wolf. The lizards continue to press forward until Kazoo strikes from the shadows, downing the southern lizard. With that, the northern lizard moves off.

After a short rest, the group presses on through the night, determined to arrive at Tyr Amar and surprise the Priest as soon as they are able. Just before dawn, a light rain begins to fall and again Alyce feels like the group is being watched. At that moment Gird shouts that they are under attack. Gird launches a beautiful jumping side kick and takes out the first lizard man as about a dozen more form a semi-circle around the heroes. The lizard man shaman blasts one group of characters with a bog cloud to distrupt them and the uses and extra action to blast the party again, calling the power of the rain and forest against the heroes. Raistlin counters and immediately takes out another with a magic missiles and two more with a lightning bolt. Kazoo notes that the lizard men seem a bit fatigued, as if they had completed a forced march. Souldun downs a lizard man, trying to block the warlord to the south. Kazoo engages against the large armored lizard man attacking from the south. Alyce continues to blast the half dozen or so remaining lizard men that are attacking from the north and east, maneuvering the party to the south and west to avoid getting overwhelmed. Souldun and Gird team to fight one of the larger lizard men. Souldun slips and falls down but struggles to make an extra effort, crawling through the mud to chop at the enemy’s feet while Gird sees the opening and with Souldun guiding the monk’s staff, they chop the lizard man to mince meat. Gird then back flips with a flurry of blows, takeing down the Shaman. As the armored brute continues to slash at the warlord, monk and rogue, Alyce notes that his reflexes are slow and blasts the heavy lizard man champion with every ounce of her remaining magic, finally downing him and causing the morale of the rest of the lizard men to break. The few remaining lizard men flee the battle field.

After a short rest, the group pushes forward and in short order announce themselves at the main gate to Tyr Amar. After passing through the main gate, the heroes note that they are being watched. Alyce notes that the watchers are members of a lizard cult who worship a god of death. The group further spots one of the cultists running full speed to the temple district. After this, the tired heroes at breakfast and find an inn to rest. After waking up, they head to the temple of the Raven Queen and find that Brother Scourge has left five hours ago. Searching the temple, they discover a powerful entity is watching the heroes from afar, using magic. Also, the temple is not a temple of the Raven Queen, it is a temple of Orcus. Having missed the priest they were looking for, the group returns to the Baron’s town. To be continued…
