History: Ember was a child that never fit in at school. She was too smart and athletic to hang around the in-crowd. She also was too athletic and pretty to be accepted by the nerds. She was considered a loner by everybody, spending much of her time studying in the library and turning out for individual only sports like long distance running/track & field. Many find her strange since she has a deep fascination with the myths about magic, witches and warlocks. She has seen every Harry Potter Movie at least 20 times and read 100s of fantasy and mythology books on the subject. With all the extensive research (+11 arcane, history and religion) she has done, many clues point to the conclusion that magic did exist at one time. All of her experiments to replicate any form of magic spell have failed. She wonders to herself if waving two sticks (her wand & staff) around is just plain crazy.

Scorching Burst at will makes a wizard a good class against Buffy-verse Vampires. As a wizard class though, since magic is only practiced by the Undead, you may be studied in 'occult lore' and may have 'practiced' magic, but have never yet seen nor cast an actual spell. (Everyone will use their first class power ever on the first adventure.)

I'll make sure there are spellbooks to find (which means the party will fight spellcasting Vampires... Twisted Evil ), and remember too, since almost no one living has ever seen magic, your class will rock people's world a lot more than many other less conspicuously magic classes.

I would assume the rebellious Devas remember and practice magic since they have the memories of a thousand lifetimes. You would think they could teach us enough to get to 1st level.

Defender type worry about spellcaster more the spellcaster.

I'm sure everybody will get noticed once battle starts.

Oh yes, everyone will be first level when we start, and everyone will use their class powers for the first time during the first adventure. Magic exists, but the living forgot about it. Yes, Giles remembers all about magic, but isn't part of a spellcasting class. You think he's more of a monk and very focused on stealth.

Because of the non-magic myth, racial effects like the Gensei electical effects are explained away with mundane means similar to electic eels. Racial abilities of a more 'magic' nature, such as Gnome invisibility or Eladrin teleportation, are latent abilities of these races lying dormant from generations of non-use. "Myths" of ancient heroes of these races possesed these magic abilities, but they are believed by the masses to be exagerated from reality.

The PCs, of course, during and after our first adventure, will be able to freely use all magic racial, class abilities, but per the origin of the PCs, all PCs up until our first encounter have only so far used mundane basic attacks, and none of your class abilities, nor your racial ability if it's obviously magic... yet!

Nice! I'm really liking a lot of the themes for the PCs in this campaign. Very Happy

You maybe were a 'Goth kid' in school, but like everyone else's racial abilities, no part of your Vampiric Heritage has manifested yet until our first encounter...

Because like all the other PCs you were barely wisked away from overwhelming odds in the dead of night from your childhood home, you didn't have opportunity to escape with your life and that much stuff. You have leather armor, repeating crossbow, and theives tool, or some other combination of 1 worn item, and 2 hand held items. You also have a pouch with (1d4*50gp). Right before the first encounter, Giles, your Watcher, also gives you a wooden stake and 100gp.

...This is just at the start of first level. When we flash forward to 6th level, we'll start out fully equipped with mundane items. We'll also have at least some magic items to start, how many depending on what happens... Twisted Evil

I'll be wearing the leather armor (Leather Jacket) and have the Repeating Crossbow and the Falchion. I like garage sales and I found these bargains awhile ago. I was just packing them up to re-sell on Craigslist when the attack occurred.

Just like Ember was into the 'occult' & Wicca groups to explain why she'd have an ember wand in her room, yes, you need a hobby like this to explain why you'd have these items in yours. Beyond just re-selling them online, you probably have some other fascination with medeval times too. Oh, since it's a modern world but not this world, we need to think of an alternate D&D dimension name for 'Craigslist'.

But yes, this hobby and/or alternate source of income (or something similar) would be necessary to explain why a high school student would have these items in their room. Ken & I may be able to get together as early as this weekend to go over the maptools, so as soon as you can please post your PCs too & everyone also include a brief background. Remember, everyone is a teenager in a world that doesn't believe in magic or Vampires, you've never used any of your racial and/or class powers before (i.e. any magic), and your background has to explain why you have the 1 worn & 2 hand held items that you have. Oh, and everyone 'happens' to have either a birthmark or early (& permanent) childhood scar exactly in the shape of a different Zodiac sign somewhere on their person.

I think that's a pretty good explanation. To add on to it me and my friends used to learn martial arts(Kendo, Karate and Kung-Fu) and would practice with any kind of weapons we could get our hands on. We would even get Pellet Guns and shoot at olde We could even throw Shuriken's at a 1'x 1' target from 30' away.
So I chose those items because of my 12-year old fascination with weapons, and the reason I'm trying to sell them...Saving for a new car.

Instead of Craigslist make it MerlinsList.

MapTools itself is pretty straight forward but I believe you're going to run into two issues:

    1. Maps
The adventure I ran was a module and I was able to find the complete module maps online. Your adventure seems to be more free form and may require custom maps.

There are several sites where you can download pre-made maps but you may have to find and download a new map for each encounter.

    2. Token editing
NPC tokens are pretty quick to make and usually only take a few minutes for each NPC type.

PC tokens take a bit more work and will need to be updated every level. I can help with initial token creation and updates.

FYI: All true stories, Oops, didn't finish the Pellet Gun Story:

We would even get Pellet Guns and shoot at teenagers that were smoking and getting drunk at the local park.

    No problem. Smile

I was just spitballing a possible explanation of how your 1/2 Vampire heritage might have manifested, before it actually manifested. It would obviously have some influence on personality as a young boy & now teenage years. It can be whatever you make up, of course.

Oh, and Ken just left and I have a map for the main floor of the casino the PCs are about to enter. Ken said he'd do some searching for a possible better one (& the other rooms we'll need) too, so I'm basically ready to start the Buffy-verse campaign online as soon as everyone can post their PC. We'll play just the first 2 levels online (the 2 where we flashforward levels), then when we start the level by level playing in Paragon, we'll do those all in person. That might time out perfectly with the crowning of the 2nd King in the Dragonborn campaign. Smile

We already made the main the easy & hard 'bread & butter' bad guys, and I just have a couple special characters to enter & we're ready to go from the NPC end. Ken also volunteered to do the hard part, creating the PC tokens, once everyone posts their PCs. PC tokens are an order of magnitude more difficult to create than NPC tokens.

Chris & Stu posted that their PCs are coming, Mick, Ken, & Ross have all posted. Can anyone contact Trevor, Kevin, Ibuki, & see if they want to play? If they do, but just not online, then 11th level on we'll be playing in person.

Let me know what your PCs want to do. As you enter the casino, you see a large, semi-crowded floor with lots of table games. (think Snoqualmie Casino) You all are easily the youngest in the room, save the serving girls in skimpy cocktail outfits, but this world has no 'underage' drinking/gambling laws, so people notice but don't really care.

Oh, and like casinos in this world, there are no windows for sunlight to enter at all anywhere in the building...

What time of day are we entering?
Are the main door made of blacked out glass?
    Any exterior windows up high?

    Looks like we have
    Ken: Monk - Striker
    Ross: Assassin - Striker
    Mick: Wizard - Controller/Striker

The party will need a defender and a Leader. A Cleric Leader would be ideal since turning may come in handy in a vampire setting.

You arrive just after dusk the day before the Harvest Moon (when a big Vampire ritual is expected). Your watcher, Giles, gave each of you a wooden stake (just in case) and 100gp each to relax & unwind before your training as a Zodiac Slayer begins. You can enter later, or not at all until tomorrow night, if you wish.

The main entry way has 2 sets of doors. Yes both blackened glass. The other entryway are the elevators to the parking garage, so metal. The only other way into the building is a delivery entrance for service personel only.

The entire building does not have a single window anywhere on it.

I think Stu is planning on playing yet another leader, though I don't really see Kenedy watching others swing versus swinging a blade herself... I kind of see her as another striker.

For a defender I would suggest a paladin. Undead won't easily ignore the mark of a paladin since he'll be doing radiant damage to them.

All of the PCs should have quite a few surges but we won't be able to access them during an encounter if we don't have a leader type.

One consideration for a paladin is that heavy armor will stick out considerably in a modern setting as far as the roleplaying goes. (and corner stores and malls don't typically sell armor.) Modern armor and people will think you're impersonating a riot cop or something. (& is also hard to come by)

Just like the wizard class & spellbooks, if you want a heavy armor class, I'll make sure we have opportunities to aquire it, so don't let that influence your decision, but we will be roleplaying the reaction of NPCs and you will stand out pretty much the same as wearing it in a cafe today would. (same with the overt displays of magic... okay, magic would be more so!)

So as long as the armor looked like say a Storm Trooper or Iron Man then it would be fine. Smile You could just say your doing a Kids Birthday party or attending a Convention.

True! It might cost more to look like that and be functional, but otherwise it could be like Spiderman in the elevator... "Nice Spidey suit." "Thanks. It kind of itches..."

At a Gen-Con you wouldn't stand out at all. In fact, you might stand out more without it!

I've created tokens for Ember, Angel, and Blade and emailed them to Brad. Hopefully there are no more edits to those PCs.

Blades took the longest as he has several class features, racial abilities, and feat abilities that needed buttons.

I also have a Longtooth Shift-Paladin named Lucian who would fit into the theme of Brad's avdentures.
But that leaves a hole in the controller/ranged artilery slot.

    -- Background --
Ashe is one of your typical teenagers besides the fact that he can breath lightning. He likes all the normal things that typically get teenage boys in trouble. He is an only child and for the most part his parents indulge him and his hobbies as long as it doesn't disrupt their lives too much and he is safe.

A gifted child; Ashe embodied the Dragonborn spirit and strove to excel in as many different activities as he could lay his hands on to keep his mind active and hone his body. As he grew he would constantly switch gears as he mastered one activity to the next. From kids sports and board games like chess and risk he moved on to extreme sports, video games, and rock music. Items and treasures from these past hobbies litter his room and the house.

When Giles whisks him away Ashe is able to grab a few things from his house that might help him. Needing something to wear he grabbed his reinforced motorcycle outfit and struck with inspiration he also snagged his families crest from the dining room. A dragon soaring above mountains on a shield in the shape of a dragonscale. A straight sword with a twin dragon hilt rested underneath. Long having been used as decoration they weren't very serviceable but with time and help from Giles network he has made them into formidable weapons.

    Item re-fluffs
-- Hide Armor - Reinforced Motorcycle outfit.
-- Longsword and shield - Family crest

    Thanks Ken for the help!

Chris, here's a slightly modified version...

    Swapped armor to Hide
    Uses a Heavy Shield
Changed main weapon to Longsword (will want to take Arcane Implement Prof to use Heavy Blades as implements)
Gave you a xbow since your ranged attack is limited to 10 squares
Swapped dailty to Majestic Halo (for one encounter any enemy starting next to you is marked by your DS)

Cool. Most teenagers in school won't have plate armor (or likely any of the starting items a PC would want), so I'm looking for sensible backgrounds to explain them. All the PCs are teenagers in school (or the non-Human equivalent) and live in a modern world (that isn't this one) where all the Living races forgot all about magic. Most of the living are more focused on work than weapons...

Btw, sounds like a tough party forming! If Stu plays another leader (likely), we'll have a controller, defender, and leader (all with striker qualities) and 2 pure strikers. I think this is supposed to be one of the ideal party mixes...

Concur! (Though I'm itching to run the 17th level Dragonborn adventure too!... it's all ready to go) Ken's online campaign was a lot of fun!

While we're waiting for Stu to post his PC, and for Ken to make the tokens for Ashe & Kenedy, we can ask any questions you might have about the intro.

I saw that Blade rolled up his starting gp. That can be used in the casino, or you can spend it (+ the 100gp from Giles) the following day in town, before the Harvest Moon ritual begins that the party needs to interrupt.

Stu PC. He told me a little about the build he's putting together. (I think Stu is planning on spelling it differently though...)

Sat days are bad for me for a while, but Fri nights, Sat nights, or Sun days are good for me pretty much any time. I posted in the scheduling thread that I can run it this weekend, next, or later, but no one responded yet.

Cool. I'm looking forward to your write up on your background. I don't have a token for Ashe yet, so I don't know how to roll it either. But, I rolled it manually and you rolled a '3' too. So Ashe has 1 worn item, 2 hand carried items, 150gp, + a wooden stake & 100gp more that Giles gave you.

The party is outside the casino and it is getting dusk. Think Snoqualmie Casino... it's about 15 miles outside of the main coastal city in a heavily wooded mountain pass. In other words, any combat-ish items you want will likely need to be purchased the following morning in town after the recon mission, unless a gift shop would have it, or you want food/drink (escorts...). There are plenty of gaming tables for you to spend your money on too...

Is there anybody at the door checking people are they enter for weapons.

I assume carrying in a 1/4 staff would be difficult.

Or a sword and shield for that matter.

Background has been updated but I should polish it. Did what I could at work.

Sometimes it's good to be a monk...

    1d8 with unarmored fist.

    Note:
Spell casters don't have to have an implement to cast spells. You'll only loose out on class features that require an implement.

I know it doesn't hurt me offensively at first level, just defensively.
I'll have to re-evaluated my choices for implements for level 6.
Carrying around a 1/4 staff will continue to be a issue in the future.

    Normally...

When a character selects a class feature it can't be changed down the road.

You can swap out feats, powers, and I believe skills, but not class features.

A staff implement can be used with one hand so I don't think it has to be a full 1/4 staff. Otherwise a halfling wizard couldn't use it.

Yours could be the size of a cane which wouldn't stand out at all.

If this is OK with the DM, I won't to modify her class feature that first level.

You haven't gone in yet, but yes, you see 2 huge Goliaths in dark maroon sports jackets that you know are security by the main entrance. If you're too scruffy looking and smelly (i.e. too poor to gamble), they will throw you out, if you have big fighting items like a staff, shield, or longsword, you'll be asked to leave them in your vehicle. They are not patting people down though (bad for business), and there are no metal detectors (that you notice), so a dagger or pistol might be easy to smuggle in.

Yes, monks & wizards are probably the easiest classes to blend in a crowd, but your Watcher, Giles, seems like a monk and carries a short spear. Being a Deva though, he doesn't blend in very well anyway, but you notice he is especially mobile and difficult to spot...

A good bluff check faking a limp and they might think it's a crutch. All staves are bigger than rods & wands though, but up to you either way. You can have whatever size staff the books say they come in.

It may be easier if I go in with Angel as his escort and he uses it as a walking cane until i need it.
