Solos or Unique Monsters

So, from both a player's and a DM's view, do solo monsters irreplacable in the scheme
of encounters in the DM's tool box?

I'm going to offer up the position that if the DM wants a unique monster to be a
repeat villian in a series, perhaps the DM is better off making the monster an
elite, or a higher level "normal" monster. I suppose the DM can even make the
monster a "normal" monster and provide the monster a couple pre-planned escape
options (e.g. like jumping off the edge of a tall cliff and the monster has feather
fall or diving into a body of water and the monster has water breathing).

What do you all think? Was the Black Dragon solo (even though he couldn't hit
anything) about the right degree of toughness and was the battle about right (time
wise) in the context of the adventure? Discuss...
