Mercury's videoblog et al

1 Mercury's videoblog et al on Mon Aug 08, 2011 3:02 am

Among Mercury's most hidden treasures were 7 Paragon magic items (13th or lower), 6 heroic magic items, hard drives from all of the security footage from the Casino Mui massacre, some various other important files, and a very high end video recorder with several video journals recorded, many with rants about the Slayers. Additionally, of course, the party also finds a gold urn with platinum & silver inlays. Giles tells you that some Undead have mastered not only how to return from life, but from death as well. Left intact, over the next 30 days or so (varies), ashes will appear in the urn, which will turn back into bone, then flesh and finaly unlife once more. Right now the urn is empty.

Ashe's gift with computer wizardry eventually cracks the security measures on the computer files. Ashe eventually compiles the video footage of the massacre into 3 different versions; an uncut version, an uncut version of the footage prior to the activities of the Slayers, and an edited version showing footage with only explanations in the numdane. (That is, no images with Vampires wearing their monster faces, giving them more power, or Slayer or Undead magic.) Most NPCs in the Buffyverse, and you Slayers as well until the Sam's Coven's pre-emptive strike on the Prophesied Ones, naturally rationalize away the especially high number of unesplained 'missing persons' that authoraties & familes can't locate, as must have an explanation but never really thought about.

Now that you all have passed puberty and have a trained Watcher to guide you, you see and accept the truth about the Buffyverse. Vampires and their Undead and Demon allies have basically conquered the world in a plan of total control that began almost 13,000 years ago when they first infiltrated the Living's political ranks in large enough numbers to use police and military to punish use, or even mention of any magic, where today the notion of it's possibility is ridicuiled by most. By others, it's hunted fiercly.

The plan, which coordinated with the procesion of the Zodiac and is almost complete, is complete control of technology and the Living, bringing societies back to a rural, harsh existance, for basically to be used as livestock for them to drink from. One advantage the Vampires and allies have over the living is patitence. Being immortal and gaining greater necromatic amd other powers as the centuries pass, a 13,000 year plan timed to the slow 'wabble' of the planet is a sound plan. All that time ago, their scriers told them that there will come youth, one for each sign of the Zodiac and bearing the mark, will appear at the end days of the 'Great Harvest', and decide the fate of all things for an Age (26,000 years). The Living, being mortal, have an inclination towards a more myopic view of the 'verse. The belief that this plan exists, or that these prophesied Slayers exist with magical power (and in fact all living have magic potential, locked dormant), and that a coming war called by the Vampires "the Great Feast" is iminent, is more than most can handle.

Only the Vampire High Councel of 13, who's members are each the heads of the 'Unnamed 13 Covens', are all only rumored to be real, even among the Vampire world. Giles tells you all that every Vampire coven ever since since the beginning of time & always, has never been more than 20 members strong, with many of the more powerful & feared covens known to only have 12. The many scores of Vamp minions you've all slain just in LD from one coven is unprecidented.

Let me know if you have any background questions about the Buffyverse world...

Among other files, Ashe finds a video blog that Mercury recorded the night before she encountered Kenneday & Angelus...

It begins the same way all the others do. Pitch black silence and darkness, then candlelight, then the sound of a heavy stone sarcophogus lid sliding revealing the room. Mercury then turns the camera on herself and begins her video journal. She's one of the only Undead that use light, and diligently records her journal every waking.

In a black slik nighty, pacing back & forth, "I HATE THOSE FUCKING SLAYERS!! They've ruined everything! Twice they've thwarted plans to raise La Magra, the Blood God, and now it'll be over a century before the next alignment of St Vigeus!" Thinking, but not saying aloud, "Even worse..." "The Slayers also castrated my sired coven leader. No, not coven leader, but horde. He went outside lines that have never before been challenged and all of Unlife was to be orgies, feasts and tortured screams of the Living for eternity."

"I want THAT Sam back. The one that slew 'Angelus the Worthy' with his sword! The broken creature that became my biggest regret when 'the Worthy' met him again wat that it wasn't me that drove the stake through. Speaking of the Worthy, it is impressive that he beat death without the methods of the Vampire or the Lich. Lord Strahd himself gave pause at that feat. But I defy Prophesy! I've conquered death both in life and in unlife numerous times, yet the Myocyne Prophesy says they can bring death to even one such as me...

I hate this laying low with only these dozen or so to drink and play with. I hope the Dryad Lich I hired is enough backup with the symbol magic I used if they find me here before it's over. His fee for gaurding the urn was signigicant enough to be noticed by the Zarovich Coven treasury keepers. Lord Strahd will need to be addressed. The gossip says the Slayers trial won't go well for them and we'll get the Living themselves to finish them. Soon we can hunt for fresh screams to hear as we feast. Shouldn't be too many more Suns or Moons until they're dead. Not a satisfying kill, but an end. Let's find out what the Living did while we slumbered..."

The Slayers gave all 3 edits of the Casino Mui security footage, to Det. Kate Lockley, a very tough, blond hottie hard nose homicide detective in Los Diables, and the one who helped you escape. She then showed 2 versions to her squad and just the one to her cheif and media. Public opinion has turned quickly and are now either talked about as 'child victims' framed by a corrupt mobster, to outright 'heroes' rumored to have rescued dozens of people.

The Slayers hae a fanatic fan club, many of which are getting Zodiac tatoos, coincidentally about the size & furver as Buffy in Season 2 in the real world. The police and most of the fans to want to bring the Slayers back in before the law. Your fans want you to clear your name before the courts, hear your story, and have you all appear live at a fan club convention afterwards. The police because you're the most bold escape ever, no casualtlies to the police force, and most of the officers at the scene are curiously quiet about what happened. Most are embarassed to admit to witnessing some of the things the Slayers did.

Because of what happened to her sister, (the science teacher the Slayers saved who was hysteric when witnessing a magic battle with a floating skull), and the officers' reluctance to be thought a crazy or else lie, and with the tapes from the casino massacre, Det Lockley quickly gained popularity among the squad for telling a cover story and not protecting them from testifying. With the Police Chief talking about retiring next year for several years now, right now, maybe without but now with the Slayer case a likely shoe in for the new Chief.

The evidence against Aura is obviously very slim. Do the Slayer women (minus Keneday plus Angelus) want to clear their name (in behalf of everybody) in court, and fulfil your Slayer duties with or within the law, or did you want to stay at large.

Oh, and the police vehicles all had car cameras installed and one of the clips released to the medea was the one of Telgarth in one blow knocking a trained officer from fresh to unconscious! Another one was Kenneday's wheelie off the truck. Giles says that's probably because the Vampires don't know much about you or for some other reason is interested in you, and want an excuse to semd police alerts to bring you in.

Because Ember is a history/occult geek, she finds out some things about Strahd, as he's relatively infamous.

He has almost 1,000 hits, 20th level solo, all defenses mid to low 30's, create a poison cloud, can change into a bat or wolf, dominate, teleport, is especially good in melee, and is also immortal, which means the urn must be located to destroy permanently. He is very wealthy and connected politically.

He almost never leaves his den, letting his cohorts & minions handle affairs. Giles fills in some blanks and says that a typical 20 member coven has the lowest 12 'living' outside the den (which Mercury was doing) and the highest 8 'living' within the den, rarely leaving.

So what happened in the adventure, including the 6th level portion?

The 6th level portion had the party running away from the cops. We encountered a couple of wights, but were able to position them between us and the cops and used them to delay the cops so that we could try to get away.

The cops ended up killing the wights for us then pursued. Since we're all moving the same speed (most of the party at least...) it took the players a while to realize that some of us needed to get captured (Brad's story line needed the police to catch some of us). After an hour or so of the chase we rolled dice and Ember, Aura, and Angelus were captured.

A simpathetic police officer (the sister of someone we previously saved) watched over us and helped us in our training, she also helped in coordinating our escape.

11th Level...
On our way to trail Aura, Ember, and Angelus were in a police van, one escort was in front and another behind us.

Ashe Blazing Starfalled the first and took out the tires. Kennedy (Stu's PC, who none of the other PC have met yet) broadsided our van and knocked out our driver (and helper). Ember was able to create a portal so that the PCs could get their equipment in the front seat.

This battle was level-5 and it showed... The police didn't have a chance and we took them out in about 2 rounds. Knocking them all unconscious, though Ember almost killed a couple with ongoing fire damage.

Once the part was back together Giles told us that Mercury was alive again and that we had to kill her, get evidence that could be used to clear our names, and to get her urn so that we could prevent her from coming back to life after we killed her.

This battle was a bit tougher...
The undead (4 undead that did 10 auto damage when bloodied that also healed their friends). I believe we took out 2 of them when Mercury and a vampire with bat wings showed up. A couple of spells were directed at the two new opponents, then Mercury teleported to the corner of the room after failing to dominate Ashe. The other vampire was immobilized by Aura. Kennedy moved adjacent to Mercury and also commanded Angelus to move adjacent. They both proceeded to rip her to shreds in a single round... (I think there were a total 6 attacks in 1 round for over 160hp (we both used action points).

The rest of the battle went pretty quickly.

The final encounter was with a dryad lich protecting Mercury's urn. There was also a trap that would do damage and weaken on a hit (and it hit a lot). The lich had very high defenses but didn't do too much damage. The battle took about two hours since we had a hard time hitting. Telgarth did a lot of damage since he gets to roll twice and Ember's flaming sphere did good auto damage until the lich remembered he could teleport away and position himself so that the ball couldn't get just him.

We eventually killed the lich, though not permanently...

We got the treasure, items and video, as well as Mercury's urn. I'm assuming we're going to destoy it before she can come back to life...

Notes...

Now that I think about it, I think the undead auto damage should probably have affected Angelus. He is undead, but also still considered a "living creature". There's a feat I could take to be no longer living, but I haven't taken it.

Also, I forgot I was suppose to use my cloak (save reroll with a +10 bonus for death saves) when I missed my death save. If I miss a death save I go unconscious (at least until I get to 16th level...)

Ember almost killed a couple with ongoing fire damage.
This was by Aura's bow

Mercury teleported to the corner of the room after failing to dominate Ashe
This was Ember who used an interupt to make her save.

The other vampire was immobilized by Aura
It was Ember's BIG that held the vamp.

They walked right through fire to chase us before. I thought they liked it. tongue

Give me some credit, I don't think you had your BIG on him yet, but the reason he stayed on the stairs until you cast it on him was my rock spirit and spirit companion getting in his way.

Very true. Credit given.

Lots of teamwork used... Ember & Aura as controllers, Kenneday & Angelus as leader/striker... Who pushed all the Shadow Claws so they lost LOS? That was a good move too. You guys had a lot of good moves upstairs. Downstairs I was surprised how unthreatening the solo Lich was & how long you guys let the trap attack you all... Without the trap weakening everyone, you'd have taken the Lich down even faster.

With the release of the security footage to the media, public opinion has turned 180* for the Slayers from sick, occultist murderers, to framed vigilante heroes, who uncovered & mostly thwarted the sickest occult ritual in history, but all the Slayers (except Kenneday) is still wanted by the law for questioning regarding the still unclosed Casino Mui massacre case.

The Slayers now know from the prison break that they're pretty handily tougher than regular police, but do you want to clear your name or stay at large for now?

We should film a Video explaining what happened at the casino, in detail, and distribute it to news stations, news magazines, police, FBI, YouTube (equivalent), etc. The more people hear about it the more they are likely to believe it. Also the more places that have it the less likely the Vamps are able to hide it from getting shown to the public.

Also throw in what happened to our families.

The growing Slayer fan base would love that, but that's not going to make the cops stop trying to bring you in (if they can).

Also note, the Vampires will certainly attempt to get you transferred to a prison they control if arrested (many, if not most), and 'outing' magic Giles warns may be more difficult than you think (media won't run the story unless mocking idea), and will attract the Vampire nation cleaners (elite lurkers) sworn to hide magical knowledge from the Living at all costs.

Yeah, it was a good time. I think the double team on Mercury would have been even more deadly if it was Kenneday and Ross' PC who is designed to attack a single enemy relative to Ken's PC who has the advantage vs. two or more enemies. Yep, I think there were six attacks, five by Ken and one by myself. My initial power granted myself an attack for 2W and then moved Ken in for a basic attack (2). My action point granted Ken another attack for 3W damage (a daily) (3). Ken's turn; he used an action point to make an attack which triggers my power to immediately grant him a basic attack (4) and then he used a power to make his attack (or was it twin stike?) (5). Then Ken used his regular standard action to make one additional attack (6th attack). Since Ken had activated his power that only lasts for one turn a battle that grants him two d20s for each attack instead of one, all of Ken's attacks hit w one being a crit. After five hits for 8W damage + a Crit, I think total damage from my turn, immediatly followed by Ken's turn was 182; pretty impressive no matter how you slice it. On Telgrath's turn, (I think it was Telgrath), he hit, putting Mercury down. Effectively, Mercury got just one turn in which to use her attack powers. The auto damage from the hands was the most fearsome aspect of this encounter. That had the potential to soak up just a ton of the party's healing surges.

Although the battle with the cops was "easy", the encounter had the added difficulty factor of not killing ANY of the cops (could be difficult). The battle at the end went long as it was very, very hard to hit the lich. It was also difficult to use "aid another" as there didn't seem to be much room to surround the lich.

That makes a huge difference. Telgarth never misses, ever (hardly) with his Oath.

Teramotos wrote:The auto damage from the hands was the most fearsome aspect of this encounter. That had the potential to soak up just a ton of the party's healing surges...

...coupled with their threatening reach 3 and +21 to hit AC, x4 of them, I thought they'd quickly drop someone as they fell too (not a lot of hits), but Aura completely nerfed their powerful defenses with her boosts.

Teramotos wrote:Although the battle with the cops was "easy", the encounter had the added difficulty factor of not killing ANY of the cops (could be difficult).

...And, you also had to down everybody. If the party left any agents conscious, then Detective Kate Lockley would have had to defend her actions in the escape. Because everyone was dropped but not killed, the Slayers still have an ally within the Los Diables Police Department that looks poised to win Police Chief.

Video blog/diary that Kate shares only with herself: "Pull yourself together Katie! You've always been a hard nose, by the book cop... now, how many laws have you broken? You're a cop, don't say you've lost count... and to think, it's since then, since I started habitually lying to superior officers, that now I'm a runaway favorite for Chief, a position I've wanted ever since... well ever since my father was too busy working a case to make my detective ceremony.

Something about those Slayers. Seeing them battle Undead with magic spells drove my little sister mad. I have to say, it's one thing to know their occult magiks are real, but it's yet another altogether to have one of them open a dimensional rift in space right next to you & have them jump back & forth as if going in between any other doorway.

Their, I don't know what else to call it, their magics, and their battle skills mowed through 20 trained officers in mere seconds. Even if the reinforcements came and there were a hundred officers, would we have these kids in custody, or just more officers down? Am I doing the right thing helping these vigilantes?

Am I even helping? I mean, I just saw these kids walk through walls and breeze through a score of officers. My sister's medical reports before she disappeared spoke of a dozen legendary superheroes, some of them pretty dark, coming in the end times.

If it's true that the reason my homicide file is always so deep is because of Vampires, and these Slayers are Vampire slaying superheroes, I say I continue to help these Slayers for now. Doing so's also coinciding with my career path going well... I wonder if that's design, karma, or coincidence. Well, if someone thinks they're playing me, trying to buy my favor, they're in for a surprise..."

Next adventure: Det Kate Lockley discovers looney bin has mysteriously high number of missing persons, her sister the science teacher among them. Looking into it, the party discovers... Vampires! What happened to the science teacher? Will the Slayers clear their names with the courts? What else will happen to the Prophesiesed Ones? Find out whenever we can play next... (12th)

I'm guessing that too. You know the dozen victims you saved from the basement want to see her destroyed. On the other hand, the Zarovich Coven is pretty wealthy and Lord Strahd might entertain talks of trade for her return.

After a week ashes appear inside of the gold urn (unless someone destroys it). Giles tells you that's typical of a 30 day resurection, which is the standard but not only time frame.
