On the WotC Optimization forum there are several people there running a series of characters through various encounters to see how different characters stack up.

    From the Lab

Some of the results are pretty interesting. My favorite is "Never Say Die"...

You mean the one with the "unkillable Revanent" that "slept through the whole battle"? ...Why'd you like that one? Shocked

Mine won't be quite so "unkillable", but I'm sure you'll find ways to challenge him. There are lots of ways to take a PC out of a battle without knocking him out or killing him... Suspect

Yeah, I'm guessing an 'unkillable' build won't have a lot of offense, so would be too boring to play (unless of course you're Nevin...) Angelus is pretty tough to kill though; round 1 every bad guy except Mercury attacked you and I couldn't even drop you at 6th. And I KNOW your build gets tougher in Paragon!...

Several of the "labs" have been updated and/or added.

One I enjoyed reading was Build Test, where a group of 21st level adventures with only basic items (no properties/powers) took on various encounters (including a level 30 solo).

Yeah, that was interesting. I'd have to agree, I don't think that the special powers from magic items are critical to a group's sucess. Yes, the special powers can be helpful, but it is more the feats, skills, teamwork, and powers that the party selects/ makes use of, that makes the difference.

There are a few items with pretty powerful properties that do make a difference.

Teleports use items to extend their range.
A few weapons have expanded critical threat ranges or other bonuses on a critical.
There are several non-neck items that give bonuses to fort/will/ref.

There are certain builds that are built around specific items that are pretty powerful compared to a non-optimized PC.
