    Extended Rest
Duration: An extended rest is at least 6 hours long.

Once per Day: After you finish an extended rest, you have to wait 12 hours before you can begin another one.

No Strenuous Activity: You normally sleep during an extended rest, though you don’t have to. You can engage in light activity that doesn’t require much exertion.

Regain Hit Points and Healing Surges: At the end of an extended rest, you regain any hit points you have lost and any healing surges you have spent.

Powers: At the end of an extended rest, you regain all your encounter powers and daily powers.

Action Points: At the end of an extended rest, you lose any unspent action points, but you start fresh with 1 action point.

Interruptions: If anything interrupts your extended rest, such as an attack, add the time spent dealing with the interruption to the total time you need to spend in the extended rest.

    Can you ride a horse?
    Be on guard duty?
    Go for a jog?
    Go gambling?

Just curious as to where the line should be drawn between "light" and "strenuous" activities.

A short rest is pretty specific (see below). So based on that, to have an Extended Rest you should be basically sitting or laying down doing nothing, borderline falling asleep or in a position that your capable of going to sleep in.

However, in the situation were talking about, I know I am usually so relaxed driving I do almost fall asleep. Thank goodness for turtles to wake me up.

    ---------------------
    Short Rest
Duration: A short rest is about 5 minutes long.

No Limit per Day: You can take as many short rests per day as you want.

No Strenuous Activity: You have to rest during a short rest. You can stand guard, sit in place, ride on a wagon or other vehicle, or do other tasks that don’t require much exertion.

Renew Powers: After a short rest, you renew your encounter powers, so they are available for your next encounter.

Spend Healing Surges: After a short rest, you can spend as many healing surges as you want. If you run out of healing surges, you must take an extended rest to regain them.

Using Powers while You Rest: If you use an encounter power (such as a healing power) during a short rest, you need another short rest to renew it so that you can use it again.

Interruptions: If your short rest is interrupted, you need to rest another 5 minutes to get the benefits of a short rest.

I'd say anything that can cause 'road rage' isn't quite resting...

How the fuck do you drive Brad!?!?

Agree with the definition giving in "Short Rest".
Can you ride a horse? I'd say not. I have riden a horse and although I admit I'm not a very good rider, it is definately not relaxing.
Be on guard duty? Yes, if you're just in place and watching an assigned sector. No, if you have to walk along a section of wall and then climb up and down a ladder and also be responsible for opening a heavy gate for allies that wish to pass your checkpoint.
Go for a jog? I'd say no.
Go gambling? If it were 21 and it's just you and the dealer in a quiet place and you can't touch the cards, just indicate how much you wish to bet, and all the while you maintain a aura of calm and only smile a little when you win, yes. If you have to walk a half mile to the cassino, it's hot and crowded, you're throwing the dice and cursing at the top of your lungs when you lose and cheering madly when you win, no.

If you drive like myself and are relaxed, traffic is moderate and mount Rainer is in the background, and if it's not for more than say 30 minutes, yes. If you are weaving in and out of traffic, yelling at other drivers, and generally driving like a jerk, no.

20-years ago when I used to drive anywhere in Seattle within 10 minutes it wasn't relaxing. But do you still drive like that now? I practically fall asleep whenever I drive somewhere longer than 20 min.

While I agree that you/we drive differently today than in our teens/20s...

Ross wrote:...I practically fall asleep whenever I drive somewhere longer than 20 min.

This sounds more like an argument for the mental toll driving has, not an argument for why this activity should reset daily powers & surges same as sleeping would.

    e.g.

A girl sitting on her couch watching soaps all day, I'd say is doing activity substantially different than the next day when she sits all day in her lifegaurd chair watching swimmers. In fact, the activity is considered so mentally taxing that by law you cannot hire someone as a lifegaurd without constant & frequent rotating break schedules.

A man sitting in his living room listening to the radio all day is doing activity substantially different to the next day when he's deliberating a trial hearing.

These all on many levels may appear similar in their exertion, but imo they are not. In all these cases, we are comparing activities with zero consequences for inattention, to activities with dire consequences for inattention.

Sure, moment by moment, this required attention may not appear as much, but by analogy; the Seattle-to-Portland bicycle ride has basically only 2 hills on the whole 200 mi trip. One of them is only a 1/4 mi long, but so wickedly steep that many riders are forced to dismount and walk. The other hill has a barely perceiveable incline but goes on for like 10 miles. It is this 2nd hill I found the more difficult of the two.
