Can you make a melee and ranged attack with Twin Strike?

View previous topic View next topic Go down  Message [Page 1 of 1]

If you're using a dagger in each hand, can you make one of your Twin Strike attacks as a melee attack. Then throw your dagger at another target? Or do both attacks have to be melee or ranged?

Twin Strike
Ranger Attack 1
If the first attack doesn't kill it, the second one might.

At-Will
Martial, Weapon
Standard Action
Melee or Ranged weapon

Requirement: You must be wielding two melee weapons or a ranged weapon.

Targets: One or two creatures

Attack: Strength vs. AC (melee; main weapon and off-hand weapon) or Dexterity vs. AC (ranged), two attacks

Hit: 1[W] damage per attack.
Increase damage to 2[W] at 21st level.

Hmm, the more I think about it the more I don't think the attacks can be split melee/ranged.

Was just thinking if you downed an opponant with the first attack and you don't have another target in melee range, then the second attack would be waisted.

A ranger using the ranged option wouldn't have that problem since they could just shoot another target in range.

I don't see a problem with splitting it up, stab & throw

The wording in the requirements indicates you can't split it.

The Attack Line says 2 Melee OR 2 Ranged attacks, not one of each.

and generally includes or. Both conditions are satisfied.

Hmm...okay, rereading the Attack Line, yeah, I'm revising my position. I'm going to say there's nothing in the RAW that precludes one of each kind of attack. I agree that the intention was two of one kind of attack, but I as long as the user of the power realizes that making a ranged attack first, would normally result in an AoO from the enemy within melee range, then I think it's fine.

The Requirements Line implies either melee or ranged, but the wording of the rest of the power does not preclude one of each. Just like the wording of the recoil shield's power doesn't impose the restriction that the opponent must be next to the user of the shield for the shield's power to function; RAW.

RAW says you must be holding 2-melee weapons or one ranged weapon. Doesn't seem to be ambiguous there. So if one of those melee weapons was one you could throw (like Ken's daggers) I could see how would be allowed to throw one and melee with the other. So if we assume that's right then if you had a shuriken in one hand and a dagger in the other you wouldn't be able to split the attack.

Of course that's just a blatant perversion of the obvious intention of the rule.

So if we say this is okay technically you can throw a heavy weapon and get to use your Dex. Letter of the law, right?

Hmmm... Can daggers and other thrown weapons be used with Twin Strike?

I just assumed they could, but when I take a closer look at the weapons tables, all thrown weapons (except for shurikens) are listed under melee.

Ranged weapons include sling, shortbow, longbow, hand crossbow, crossbow, and shuriken.

It does list improvised weapons under ranged weapons. Not sure if other thrown weapons would go under here...

At work and didn't bring my resources. Don't they have throwing axes and hammers?

Yes, but they are listed under melee weapons.

PHB page 215: "A melee weapon with the heavy thrown or the light thrown property counts as a ranged weapon when thrown and can be used with ranged attack power that have the weapon keyword."

Also found a thread about splitting Twin Strike attacks (melee/ranged):

http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/24055269/Twin-Strike,_Ranged_and_Melee&post_num=9

Most say that RAW no, but they's allow it.

Hey, if I were the DM, I'd allow it. I don't agree with the above thread where they cite RAW no. I think we've covered that already in our own thread. As far as using improvised thrown weapons and such, sure...if the PC doesn't mind taking the associated penalties for throwing one of his melee weapons, go right ahead. Yep, if you are making a ranged attack against a distant enemy but have an enemy next to you, you normally provoke an AoO.
