Campaign INTRO: (Note: This is a modern setting, but not THIS modern setting... some things are different...)

All the living races live either in cities or in rural areas and their day to day, for the most part, consist of mundane labor or other activity. It pleases the Undead secret overlords to 'play with their food', gaining delight from the fear & misery of the living. This is only part of the reason why the Vampire nation a thousand years ago changed the history books and made practice, use, or mention of magic a punishable by death offense for 3 generations of Man. Several centuries later all of the stories of magic and Vampires, while pervasive still, are laregely believed to be only myth.

The Vampire Covens hunt their prey very carefully, getting the requisite invitation for all of them to enter somehow, then jamming phone, internet, & communications for those within. They typically wait until 5 minutes to dawn (the Undead 'witching hour') to feast. They then spend the day inside (with all of the drapes/blinds closed) removing all trace of the previous night's feast within the home waiting for the sun to set again.

In initiative order, once everyone finishes making their PCs,...

You wake hearing commotion from the other room, then screams, then fighting. Your bedroom door opens, and down the hall you see a couple dozen Undead monsters in the other room and can hear more checking the rest of the house as a Vampire stands before you. You for the first time see & believe that Vampires are real, and first hand discover that the lore of their super Human(oid) speed & strength are true.

Fight or flight instincts kick in and you choose fight, but you handily lose, about to loose conciousness when suddenly your assailant poofs into a cloud of dust, and standing before you holding a wooden stake where the Vampire's heart used to be, is a hooded figure of what you think is a tall adult male Deva. Since Devas are well known to be part of the criminal underworld, you've all seen images of them on tv, but have never met one in person.

Before you pass out, he quickly wisks you away, stealthily passed a perimeter of Vampires outside the house, to a subtle vantage point where you safely watch the old life you knew gone in a night. Sometimes hurriedly, sometimes leasurely, you travel with the Deva Giles, across the continent, saving school age youth from the same fate.

Along your travels he trains you and the other youth (PCs) that Vampires are real, magic is real (though can show you none), and that you all are 'Zodiac Slayers', prophesised champions of the end times battle. His race, Devas, have been prosecuted by the Undead for generations for remembering the secrets of the Myocyne prophesies, and pledging to find and help prepare these chosen Slayers.

The beater transportation you all travel in tells you that Giles is not a wealthy man and that a millenia on the run from the law is not a particularly profitable occupation. This is of note because looking around you see that each of you in the car escaped with 1 change of clothes, wallet (w/1d4*$50) and 2 hand carry size items that you were able to grab from your room on your way out. Not much to both start a new life and learn to fight Vampires.

Once Giles picked up the last Slayer, he speeds you all to a fairly new coastal casino. He doesn't go near but drives past into the woods about a mile past. By the time you arrive it is getting dark. He gives each of you a wooden stake and $100 to eat, drink, gamble, relax before your training begins...

Let me know what your PCs want to do. As you enter the casino, you see a large, semi-crowded floor with lots of table games. (think Snoqualmie Casino) You all are easily the youngest in the room, save the serving girls in skimpy cocktail outfits, but this world has no 'underage' drinking/gambling laws, so people notice but don't really care.

Oh, and like casinos in this world, there are no windows for sunlight to enter at all anywhere in the building...

    Any exterior windows up high?

You arrive just after dusk the day before the Harvest Moon (when a big Vampire ritual is expected). Your watcher, Giles, gave each of you a wooden stake (just in case) and 100gp each to relax & unwind before your training as a Zodiac Slayer begins. You can enter later, or not at all until tomorrow night, if you wish.

The main entry way has 2 sets of doors. Yes both blackened glass. The other entryway are the elevators to the parking garage, so metal. The only other way into the building is a delivery entrance for service personnel only.

The entire building does not have a single window anywhere on it.

The party is outside the casino and it is getting dusk. Think Snoqualmie Casino... it's about 15 miles outside of the main coastal city in a heavily wooded mountain pass. In other words, any combat-ish items you want will likely need to be purchased the following morning in town after the recon mission, unless a gift shop would have it, or you want food/drink (escorts...). There are plenty of gaming tables for you to spend your money on too...

Angel's starting gp... Dwarmaj carried out 1 launched of one d4 :
    1
    *50+100=200gp

Angle's not a big gambler, but he will put some money (50gp) down on a few sporting games (what ever is in season). He'll also find a nice low limit table where he can watch a game from and play there to pass the time.

As far as items he'll carry with him, Angle will make sure he has a nice dagger.

    Question:
Do shurikens have to be stars? Can you have a dart shuriken? Can you have a wooden dart shurken?

    Questions:
Do the service personnel have uniforms that are nondescript such as a white uniform with a small logo or is the uniform in the "casino" style such as the entire uniform is basically a logo? What sorts of service personnel go through? Bus boys, chefs, hotel staff, band members, waitresses, etc? How frequently? What would we approximate the size of the personnel in this casino to be so we might be able to get in inconspicuously.

Do we have a safe house or storage place where we can store money/items? I don't particularly want to walk into a casino with all the cash that he has. If I can store some I will only bring in 40GP. As a side note how badly are the casino's/gambling games fixed in this universe?

This is just a recon mission correct?

While we are watching does anyone go into the casino with sunglasses on? drive up in a limo? Have bodyguards or a definite entourage? Obvious hardware (guns, knives, etc)? Stand out from the crowd such as wearing a tux or 500gp suit while most people are suburbanites?

Before we head in can we alter our recognizable features any? Casino's have cameras everywhere and while we are not on their radar yet we will be soon. I would rather they not have us on file yet. For sure if this is a recon mission I will not be wearing my shield, sword, or motorcycle outfit as those are all easily identifiable.

I will leave my weapons with Giles and just bring the stake , hidden in my leather jacket. I will go directly to the gift shop and buy some bad ass sunglasses. Then go play some craps. Will spend stop if I lose $100 or earn $100.

I don't know if this is a GM decision or if the books spell this out. Help anybody?

    Krystoff wrote:Questions:

Yes, the bouncers at the door, the cocktail waitresses, and the dealers are all in uniforms. The waitress' are particularly skimpy. All of them say "Mr. Mui's Casino" with an image of a weird symbol.

    Krystoff wrote:

For now, you are just entering, so don't know how frequently they change shifts. Ken just sent me a fancier map, but I'm having some trouble downloading it, but we were looking for the biggest floor area we could find online. We'll get a map up soon. Two bouncers each by the main entrance & the elevators, one dealer per table, 2-5 players per table, 2 pit bosses on the floor, and a lot of eye candy serving drinks.

    Krystoff wrote:

You have the car about a mile away where Giles (& Stu & possibly Ibuki's PCs) are waiting for you.

    Krystoff wrote:
This is just a recon mission correct?

Ostensibly, tonight is a 'night off' for the PCs, but yes, your Watcher tells you all that tomorrow night a Vampire ritual is going to happen there that you have to stop, so some recon would be good...

Not THIS night, and no one is allowed in with obvious hardware. The bouncers have pistols holstered.

Looks like Ember is only starting with 50GP+100GP

She will enter without her cinder wand, cane staff or the wooden stake.

She'll go to the gift stores and buy a hot short skirt dress and a pair 2" high heels with 100GP
Other acessaries (handy wipes, nail polish, hair bands, and perfume for 20 GP
Spend 10 GP on a good meal and a fruity drink.

After that, she will go around and case the casino out.
From the outside she should be able to get an idea of how many floors the building has.

Check out the elevator: is it for public use or privite use? One buncer there?

Check the service enterance: look in if there are windows. if not, wait for someone to go in or out.
What do I see. Note how the door work: swing in & out? door handles? locking mechanism?

Check out money collection: GP taken at the tables and later picked up by armed guards?
It wmay be a good chance to collect some funds for our use.

Alright, Ember is broke, but looking smoking hot. We'll say you still have 4gp, as after making an effort to get dolled up, there are a few male patrons willing to buy you all the drinks you want.

Elevators from the parking garage are for guests, as is the main entrance. The service entrance is a metal 2x door opening out with a buzzer that says "deliveries" (not for guests) from the parking level on the far side from the guest elevators.

There is still not a single window anywhere at all on the entire building.

Beside the parking levels, the bottom floor is where you think is the kitchen is (the guest elevators do not stop on this floor), the middle floor is the main gaming floor, and the top floor you think are offices or something, but is off limits to public.

There are a pair of armed Goliath bouncers at both the elevators and the main entrances.

Being nighttime, you don't see any deliveries, as you might expect. As far as cash collection schedule, we'll wait until everyone posts their starting actions before I start posting what happens after you've been there a while.

The casino is built on the slope of a wooded mountain, so the main entrance & parking garage are both at 'ground level' and if it did have a window (which it doesn't), it would be a great view...

Is the parking garage separate or is it underground parking?

Does it seem like there are more vehicles than people in the casino? Just trying to find out if there are more people in the casino in areas we don't have access to. (ie if there are vehicles for 1000 people, but we only see a couple hundred then something doesn't add up).

Does Giles tell us where the vampire ritual will be?
Does Glies give us any information for us to be able to detect a vampire? (In 1E, vampire were repelled by garlic, are there any garlic items on the dinner menu?)

Are there any stairs that we can take to go up or down? Are the stairs guarded like the elevator?

Are the employees from a particular racial group besides the bouncers? (Trying to find out how hard it would be to impersonate one.)

So there parking levels below, then the kitchen level, then the casino level and then an office level above.

Go into the elevator for a ride. Is there a button going up to the office level above? Any stairs going up to that level?

Adding to what the others have asked; Do the bouncers or other staff have ID security cards? The kind that can be read to get through doors?

How late are the restaurants open? Figure an hour after that for support staff (bus boys, dish washers, etc) to finish up and leave the building.

Ashe will have his 40GP and play small ante games of either blackjack or craps. If he is winning more than $100 he will slow down on the games/sit out some rolls so that he doesn't become watched more than normal.

Ashe will also try to disguise himself slightly to make recognition much harder.

The bouncers have a bunch of keys off their gunbelt, the serving girls & dealers all have nametags, but otherwise no security ID (that you can tell).

The restaurant does not close. It, the bar, and the casino are 24-hours. Note: This world does not have a 'last call' time where public drinking is prohibited... you can drink at any age or any time of day legaly.

Early evening, more people coming than leaving. Giles has been driving across country picking up the PCs and sped from picking up the last of you to get you all here tonight.

Giles isn't going in because there are blanket warrants for his arrest (& all Devas) and he needs to lay low.

Sure, Ember will accept a couple of drinks from some of the men at the tables.
She'll stand next to the men who have large amounts of chip in from of them.
If they ask her to sit down, she'll tell them in a poutty voice that she has lost all her money.
She accept drinks or money they may let her wager.
She'll ask them: Do you come here often? Does he get comps at the casino? Does he know the casino owners?

Mine was to head to the craps/blackjack tables and watch different things (like I have been posting) while playing. I have 40GP to spend over the night.

Okay, my bad. We'll reconcile everyone's actions once Telgarth posts his initial actions...

Those of you gambling, I'll try to get a map up tomorrow (without Telgarth's token yet), but do you try to stick close together on the same table (or near) or spread out throughout the casino?

Telgarth uses the alias Jamison, tries to modify his looks minorly, leaves longsword with Giles, but wears his holy symbol under his clothes. He needs a starting $ roll. He is looking for areas that may be used to disappear from view/hide. Trying to find camera blind spots, watching patrol and cart routes. He is also looking for weapon sources other than the obvious - table legs, chairs.

Telgarth spends no more than 20 gp gambling, but does eat well. Who knows when we may rest again?

Ok, one way or another we'll have a map up tomorrow, but I'm having trouble opening the nicer one Ken found. At worst, we'll use the first one we found, but we'll have a map tomorrow...

I take it you all are entering seperately and not advertising you all are together, and give it enough time to get a feel for shifts, etc, so I'm going to say after 3 hours of playing, shopping, eating, observing...

(Stu's PC): sleeping in the car and/or talking with Giles.

Blade: You find sunglases from 15gp to 120gp, and the 'badass' ones you like for 95gp. On the craps table, you are up 50gp, and you notice that a lot of people are winning, and all 3 dealers that rotate through your table give you that same 'bad vibe' that the monsters that killed your family gave off, and they all ask you questions, "You look familiar, do I know your family?", "Hey, what brings you here this weekend?", "So, have you signed up for our player's card?" (hands you an application, you think fishing for your name) You get the same vibe from the waitress that comes by you, and she seems to look at you intently...

Ember: Already answered the 'casing the outside' questions, once you go back in & start flirting for chips, drinks, it works surprisingly well, since most of the table you're at is winning and feeling good. You get a 'bad vibe' from the first dealer that reminds you of the monsters that attacked your family when you escaped, but then it goes away and you don't notice it again from anyone else. Your free chips & drinks and your winnings add up and you have an extra 75gp. You aren't used to exploiting your feminine wiles, being the former loner in school, but it's working very well and you are really enjoying yourself and feel very good. You have 2 "Golden Keys" for a chance to win a car tomorrow, so far. Most of your suitors are from the city & play regularly and are here for the car promo this weekend. They all make comments like, "So Where's Jo, he off today?" to the dealers. None seem to mind as these new dealers are doing pretty well by them... Most are familiar with Mr. Mui, the owner, as he often walks the floor giving away chips to customers...

Ashe: <10+6=16 bluff (disguise) check> The stools are padded leather, but you think they're metal, since they're bolted to the floor, but the tables are all made of wood (including the legs). You quickly win your 'soft max' and because so many others are also winning, you keep playing and are up 250gp and have 3 "Golden Keys" for tomorrow's drawing. You notice that all the dealers look pretty experienced with cards/dice, but quite a few don't know where the bathrooms are, bar is, etc. You notice that the Goliath bouncers every even hour, 2 come down the stairs, replace the 2 at the elevators, who replace the 2 at the main entrance, who then collect the money cages from the tables then bring them upstairs...

Angel: You are eating at the bar and down 25gp from ordering & tipping big. You can see the stairs going up/down, and no one except the bounces every couple hours use the up stairs, but the serving girls are constantly going up/down the down stairs busing tables and bringing food/drinks. Sometimes there's as few as 1 girl at the bar near the stairs, but usually 3-4 as they take chat & take breaks from working the floor. The waitress you chat up is new. She tells you that Mr. Mui hired a lot of extra staff because of the car give-a-way promotion, concluding tomorrow night. You just spent the last couple hours with hottie after hottie flirting with you and you are feeling very happy and good...

Telgarth: <Wow, 20+5=25 bluff (disguise) check!> Your starting gp roll is a '2', so you have 100gp + the 100gp Giles gave you. You notice the cameras are watching every angle of the tables, entrances, and stairs, but you do find plenty of blind spots near the walls, bathrooms etc. You see the craps dealers hae wooden rakes for the table, but you know you can't use them more than once each since they're pretty thin. You don't see much other wood, except for the building walls themselves. After a big meal, you start playing the low stakes games and are on a roll and feeling great! You are up 200gp and have 2 "Golden Keys".

...After these 3 hours, Blade & Ashe see each other and are ready to reconoiter, and you both see that Ember, Angel, and Telgarth have completely lost track of time and are really enjoying themselves...

Ashe, Blade... What do you want to do next?

I will cash out and head to the restaurant and get something to eat. I will not get any alcohol instead I will drink mineral water.

Out of the tables I have seen how many golden keys have been given away?

What sort of bodyguards does Mr. Mui have when walking the floor?

    Got it.

About 4/5 of the players have at least a couple Golden Keys. Blade is one of the few that has none. A few have as many as 12-15, but most are in the 4-5 range. They are giving away a car every hour tomorrow from midnight to dawn tomorrow and you need a key for a chance to win.

Zero, but often has his lady friend with him. He hasn't been seen tonight.

As soon as possible cash out $350; takes a walk through the casino talking to other players gauging how often they play; how many regulars are in the facilities; if all of the service staff is new; as Mr Mui walks the floor often, ask the regulars how often he isn't present.

'Jamison' isolates a weapon source or two. Looks like they will be scarce. The dealer rakes don't count.

Got it! It finally worked & they look great! Hey, I went to Maptools online and opened a bunch of token images, but the edit mode only let me see a small sample of choices. ...In otherwords, I am not very computer literate, and a couple hours with Ken tutoring me does not make me a 'Ken' on the computer. I have the story down, but expect some technical difficulties to start...

I positioned the PCs as best you all described, now I just have to add the NPC tokens, and then add it to the thread. Working on that later today.

If you're pressing the right button then it is probably a browser setting that needs to be changed.

Sorry for the technical difficulties everyone, especially Ken, who has to spend time helping me figure out what to do next! Smile

Until then, Stu's PC can get out of the car (3 hours after everyone else) or ask Giles, everyone's Watcher, any one-on-one questions, or hang out and/or sleep in the car, and it's Blade's turn. You see Ashe headed to the bar to order some food...

After I'm up $50 I will cash in my winnings. As I'm walking out to leave I'll throw the dealer and $10 tip and tell him, "My name is Brooks, but you can call me Blade." Then I'll walk out of the Casino towards our car, stealthing to lose anyone that might follow.

Got it. Blade rolls a (7+11=18 stealth) and (13+10=23 perception) and are pretty sure you made it back to the car unfollowed. You make it back and Giles is awake and (Kenedy? -Stu's PC) is asleep. You can ask Giles any one-on-one questions you may have wanted to ask, but in a crowded car never seemed like the right time... How long do you wait for the others to come out? Do you do anything in the meantime?
