I might not have skipped work but I know its a quiet day because everyone else stayed home which means its not the most productive day. I only live 5 miles from work so it will take a lot to get me to miss because of weather.

I walked...

down to the train station and took the Sounder to downtown. I usually drive to the train station, but James street usually gets closed when it snows and I didn't want what happened last time we had snow to happen again. Last time it took me 5 hours to get home and I was less than a mile away from my house. This way it's a 15-20 min walk.

If it snows again tomorrow, maybe we can setup a RPTools session.

Only have front wheel drive and was able to maneuver the hills around my house and on Beacon Hill with no problems at all. Only like 3 or 4 people here though, so it will be a nice leisurely day for me.

If we do an RP Tools game I can play from work, but probably couldn't host it....Ken?

I don't think we'd need all of the tokens to work, as those are just added benefits, but not necessary to play.

I'm working from home today until ~3. I have some errands to run so I wouldn't be able to play until later this evening.

Yes, it would have to be as i have nothing ready and wouldn't have the time at work. Maybe Stu could, but doubt it as he probably has a Kobe running around.

Of course you consider a non-moving fallen tree stump a worthy opponent.

16 Trees on Fri Dec 19, 2008 11:26 pm

...hey now! That was like 18 years ago and there were two guys shooting at me! So it was a tree AND two guys against me and (okay, I'll admit it) Saki.
So, I took out the tree (errr, the tree took me out, but I was still in the game) and Saki took out both of the bad guys. So there, Saki and Stu in, bad guys out, tree still in, but not shooting back.
If I had known TaeKwanDo back then, well, they do teach us how to break wood boards and that tree was made of wood...

Made it in again. Deeper snow though so chance of people getting stuck will increase. I put on some cables on my front wheel drive sedan and got around no problem. Driving 30 mph on the freeway sucks though.

We going to make online gaming plans for next Saturday? It looks like the snow is supposed to stick around for awhile.

Guess that 4-Wheel Drive vehicle you have isn't all that, eh. Quite a few people here at work, but most have been coming in late.

I can get there no problem but since I can work from home, why bother? I've got the laptop and can work on almost everything I can from work.

23 Roads Report 22 Dec Newcastle 2000 hrs on Mon Dec 22, 2008 8:41 pm

There is about 3 feet of snow piled up on the side of my cleared driveway and about 8" in the backyard. Once you get to the top of the steep hill just before the house, the road is bare and wet, plowed and sanded, easy driving even w/o 4 WD. Coal Creek Pkwy is wet and slushy, and non-4x4 cars can make it even w/o snow tires but they have to drive slower than usual (25 mph). Once you get to Sunset, it is clear sailing. If I were to drive to Damon and Cheri's house from here, I could make it in nearly the normal amount of time. The only areas I would slow down more than usual would be going down long, steep hills, especially before signal lights or stop signs.

If road conditions are like this on Saturday, the game is still on. Smile

24 Roads Report 26 Dec Newcastle 1400 hrs on Fri Dec 26, 2008 2:26 pm

The main roads to Newcastle are in pretty good shape. Coal Creek Pkwy is bare and wet and very, very passable. From the main intersection at the very bottom of my hill up to the top of the hill where the house is, there is a plowed path up the hill. The road is compact snow and slush. A regular car without traction devices can make it as long as you do not stop in the middle of the hill. If you have to stop for any reason, you have to back down to the flat, get up some speed and try again.

After the top of the hill, the road is packed snow and slush for two blocks and then the final turn before the house, the road is mostly untouched snow 10" + deep with packed paths where other cars have travelled. The area 200' in front of the house is compact ice and snow, tough going if you don't have 4WD or traction devices. If you can make it to my driveway, there is cleared, safe parking for five vehicles. Summary, I'm 90% sure you all can make it to within four blocks of the house; 75% sure you can get within two blocks and 50% sure you can get in my driveway. If you can make it, you will be able to get home because your car will be facing uphill and to go home, you just have to back down to the flat and turn around. If you really get stuck, I have a 4WD SUV with a 10K lbs rated tow strap and I've already hauled no less than three cars out of the snow, tried and failed to pull a really stuck Accord out, and used the strap to have a passing F250 haul ME out of a drainage ditch.

25 Roads Report 26 Dec Newcastle 2030 hrs on Fri Dec 26, 2008 8:25 pm

The snowplow came. Coal Creek Pkwy and Sunset Blvd are both bare and wet, easy driving. From Coal Creek up to nearly the top of the hill just before the house, the road has been plowed well. The majority of the hill is bare with a few patches of ice and there is about 2 to 4' of snow piled up on the road side. Within 100' of the top of the hill, you start seeing a 1" coating of slush on the road which, within the next two blocks turns to 4" of slush and then snow over compact ice. The last turn before the house, you are driving on top of 8" of compact snow and ice until you go two more houses to my cul de sac. In the cul de sac, it is 12" of untouched snow in places (unpassable for regular cars) with lots of tracks where my SUV has rolled over the snow and a few bare patches of concrete where the neighbors dug out thier car. This last 200' will be the toughest going. If one of your tires falls into a low spot or your grill gets lodged in the snow, you might have to call for help.

So, I am 95% confident that you can get within two blocks of the house and still only 50% confident that you can get to my driveway (which at this moment is entirely clear of snow and has room for everyone).
