    Pyramid - Level 2 Empty Pyramid - Level 2

Post by Dwarmaj Wed Jan 20, 2010 11:14 am

The party heads up the stais and reaches a set of double doors. Thia and Candelos listen and don't hear anything.

The door is not locked. The party enters into a large hallway.

Ahead, a 20' wide corridor streaches to the south. It ends in a set of double doors. Just north of the corridor's end, a second set of double doors leads to the east. Seven leering, demonic faces hang on the walls here. Two flank each door, and anothr three are evenly spaced along the western wall, across from the door to the east. The idols are vaguely humanoid, with long horns and mouths that gape open, revealing darkness beyond. Each face is 4' tall, with the mouth accounting for 3' of that length.

If the faces don't appear to be some sort of trap, I don't know what does. Says Sonya. Recommend Thia with aid from one or two of us, check out the first face as we move slowly to the sets of doors. If the area is not trapped, then we can listen at the doors and decide which set to open. Given a choice the doors to the East are closer and I don't care to have potential enemies attack from the rear.

Who's going to check out the faces?

I have one vote for Thia...

I've advanced the party a few steps and the party can see down the halway to the east. There are another set of double doors.

We should probably check those double doors before we go down the hallway with the faces.

    Concur. Let's go West & listen/open the 2x doors & see what's there.

Question: Are the 3' mouth openings solid, like statue carvings, or are they hollow, like tunnels that smaller or snake like creatures could travel through?

Note: If it's the latter, we might be opening up our rear by not checking out the faces first...

Agree, go to the doors to the East (Brad meant East, although he typed West). Check the doors for traps (Sonya will be glad to aid Thia if Candelos or Kaddim wants to guard the rear for a moment) and then listen.

Hard to tell, no one has been closer than 20' to the faces.

The opening where the mouths are are pitch black and does not brighten up when a light source is near.

(To Stu's point, I meant 'East')

As we go down the East hallway, it might not be a bad idea for Thia to shoot an arrow down the mouth of the first face to see if it's an opening that something could attack us from though...

Yep, the double doors to the East it is. Sonya suggests that Thia move to the East doors and check for traps with the aid of either Kaddim or Candelos or both. Since we're expecting an attack from behind, Sonya will have her shield and axe at the ready and stay in the back (to the West of the party) guarding Miri. This way, our heavy hitters are up front, our best ranged attackers are in the center so they are able to attack to the East or the West, and we have an armored person to our rear just in case an attack does come from there.
(I think Sonya has the best AC 25/27 after Miri, the best all around defenses, and almost as many hits as Kaddim and Candelos.)

Thia shoots an arrow into one of the "mouths". The arrow goes into the mouth and hits something solid (stone like sound).

Thia and Candelos listen at the double doors, but don't hear anything or detect any traps on the door. The doors are locked, but Thia easily unlocks them.

Opening the doors reveals a corridor (north/south).

Yes, to the north is a dead end.

Heading a little south the party sees:
South - a set of double doors that are open. Then another set of double doors that are closed about 100' away.

Along the south wall to the east you can see stairs leading up.

To the far east you can see a set of double doors that are closed.

I vote to check out the double doors to the far East; ignoring the stairs up for now. SoP, Thia checks for traps at the doors w someone aiding, listen w someone aiding, unlock and go in.

    Heading east...

As the party approaches the stairs they see that the stair case is 20' long and ends in a set of double doors.

Keeping to the east the party gets to the double doors. Thia and Candelos listen for a couple of rounds and check the door for traps. Nothing is heard or found.

Thia is able to unlock the door, but it did take her several rounds to do it.

The door is unlocked, but seems stuck and doesn't open. What does the party want to do?

Can Thia set a trip wire type trap on the stairs.
It may help signal us in case of a rear attack.
I'm OK with busting in the door.

The Thievery skill allows you to disable traps, but not set them. There must be a trap setting ability somewhere...

For now I'm going to say that Thia doesn't have the materials needed to make an effective trap on the stairs.

Candelos is able to force the door open (DC 20 Str check), though it took two rounds to do it.

A blast of freezing air assaults you as the doors reluctantly swing open. The floor ahead is convered with a thich sheet of ice that looks dangerously slick. Frost coats the walls and the five other sets of doors leading out of this hallway.

The party closes the door, locks it, ices it, then backtracks and heads south.

The party reaches a set of double doors which are locked. Thia doesn't detect any traps and unlocks the door.

This door opens easily into another corridor headed south.

I'll secure the doors we just came through to make sure they don't lock or close, putting my axe in the doorjam if required. Also, I'll look back down the hall we just came from to enable me to alert the group of anything behind us.

I'm currently waiting on the PCs...

Ahead of the party is an archway that transformed into the mouth of a devil. Behind the party is a door that Sonya propped open and is gaurding.

Miri asked the mouth a question and got no response.

    What next?

Sonya will continue to secure the party's rear flank; waiting for Miri, Candelos, Thia and Kaddim...

Candelos will go first. He'll have orb out in case he need to teleport out of danger.

As soon as Candelos enters the devils mouth, it slams shut (it's action happends before Candelos has a chance to react).

The party can see the mouth begin chewing and hears Candelos' screams from inside. Occasionaly the other party members see the mouth swallow and then chew some more.

After a couple of rounds the mouth reopens. There is no sign of Candelos.

What does the party (those that are left...) want to do?

Hmm the boards seem to have eaten my post.

Does anyone have any telepathic communication? Do we have one heart one mind up?

Miri will call out to Candelos to see if he can hear her.

Also, she'll walk up to the edge of the opening and inspect it closely... Is there blood & other signs someone was eaten, or does it look exactly as it did before?

Miri calls out to Candelos, but there is no reply.

Yes, there is blood, ground up bits of flesh/bone on the teeth inside of the mouth. And it smells really foul.

Sonya can check out side the hallway she's gaurding and sees no sign of Candelos or any other creature.

Miri will try an acana check to see what kind of magic this mouth uses; illusion, teleportation, transmutation, etc.

She'll then cast 'Mage Hand' and move the hand into the mouth to grab a piece of bone/flesh to inspect. If it's really strong smelling, it's probably old & rotting a while... does it look like a fresh kill? Is it an illusion that disappears?

The mouth is definetly magical, but Miri is unable to determine they type of magic.

Miri is able to use Mage Hand and retrieve a chunk of the bone/flesh. It looks freshly ground.

If it's an illusion, it's better than anything you've ever seen.

...well, that was really crunchy...metagame thinking, can't believe the designers wouldn't give the poor PC any chance at all. Yeah, throwing another body in actually sounds like a good idea. Should we all hustle back together or just two of us go? Sonya's willing to go back and get the harpy.
