    Aya 30th:

    History:

    Zodiac Symbol:
Each warforged has a unique rune on its forehead, much like humans have unique fingerprints. This rune is known as a “ghulra,” a word that means “truth” in Primordial.

Aya's ghulra is a violet Gemini (about 3" in height).

====== Created Using Wizards of the Coast D&D Character Builder ======
    Ember -Wiz, level 13
    Genasi, Wizard
    Build: War Wizard
Arcane Implement Mastery: Staff of Defense
    Elemental Manifestation: Cindersoul
Background: Genasi - Academic Exhibit (+2 to Arcana)

History: Ember was a child that never fit in at school. She was too smart and athletic to hang around the in-crowd. She also was too athletic and pretty to be accepted by the nerds. She was considered a loner by everybody, spending much of her time studying in the library and turning out for individual only sports like long distance running/track & field. Many find her strange since she has a deep fascination with the myths about magic, witches and warlocks. She has seen every Harry Potter Movie at least 20 times and read 100s of fantasy and mythology books on the subject. With all the extensive research (+11 arcane, history and religion) she has done, many clues point to the conclusion that magic did exist at one time. All of her experiments to replicate any form of magic spell have failed. She wonders to herself if waving two sticks (her wand & staff) around is just plain crazy.

    Paragon Item Wish List
    Grace Ring o Prowess (L19)
    Bands of Equilibrium (L18)
    Ring of Radiant Storm (L17)

    Zodiac Scar:
Ember has a red Aires (about 2" in height) on her right back side of her neck.

While Telgarth's family is one of sun worshipers, he was one of the more extreme practioners. He reveres the cleansing of the sun and light of hope and the compassion of life. Through his research/worship of many of the sun deities, his studies lead him to the discovery of an ancient tome of Pelor. He would often search the antique shops and even spent a summer at a dig site of Pelor. It was at this dig that Telgarth discovered the symbol of Pelor among the debris. After showing the site academia the token, Telgarth borrowed the piece to meditate. It was then he had the vision of Pelor and Boarblade protecting the less fortunate. At the end of the summer, the head of the dig gave Telgarth the minor token in appreciation; never knowing how important it was to Telgarth.

While Telgarth excelled in studies and athletics as a child, he found little solace in the ‘normal’ sports. Too often in the heat of competition, he would be savage almost animalistic; exhibiting enormous strength, speed and endurance. Many years ago, he was introduced to the calming influence of Tai Chi. He expended considerable effort to become well versed in many of the different forms, but was exquisite at the sword forms. Being a perfectionist, he then began studying other styles of sword play (medieval and other martial arts.)

As Giles and Telgarth escaped into the darkness, Boarblade managed to grab both of his prized possessions, the ancient Pelor holy symbol and the Tai Chi sword.

Telgarth has a 3" Golden Scorpio symbol on his right forearm.

Brad, I'd like to change my

The +2 to force power doesn't work with Magic Missiles as I hope.

    Background:
Aura is a descendent of the Shurifon clan of elves. They share their name with the Shurifon forest where most of the clan resides. While very similar to elves, they commonly have darker skin tones and pale hair colors, sometimes causing them to be mistaken for Drow despite having more in common with normal elves. Their skin color has also lead to them commonly being called "Dark Elves." The Shurifon elves also vary from most elves in that they tend not to be as slender, having a slightly more muscular build. Long lost books from the age of magic speculated that the dark elves were actually "imported" en mass from a parallel world by powerful vampire mages seeking to increase the number and variety of humanoids to feed on. This theory came about because while elves and dark elves are very similar, their lineage cannot be traced back to a common point. This theory also supports the current variety of humanoid races found in the world, as they may also have been brought here against their will to be livestock for the vampires.

Aura herself grew up with her mother and father in a cabin on the edge of the Shurifon forest. Her parents wanted her to have more exposure to the modern world than they did in their upbringing, so she attended school in town, and lived a fairly normal life. Her mother passed away when Aura was a pre-teen, but Aura had already learned her people's history and legends from her. Her father shared his knowledge of nature with her, and taught her how to use a bow. She enjoyed high school, getting good grades in most studies, making friends, and having a natural athletic talent at sports.

Unfortunately, two years ago the remote location of her home made it an ideal target for a couple recently-sired vampires out looking for a snack. Aura was woken in the middle of the night by commotion and yelling, and when she looked into the living room she found her father being attacked by two men with grotesque faces and fangs. Her father did a lot work outdoors and was by no means a weak man, but these two men seemed impossibly strong for their size. Her father managed to turn one's momentum against him, and sent him sprawling headfirst into the fireplace, burning the side of his face on the dying embers. Even this didn't stop him, and instead just seemed to make him angry. It was then that the second man noticed Aura peering through the door. Her father noticed this, and with a panicked expression on his face, told her to run. The second man blocked her escape, and was clearly enjoying toying with her. She retaliated by hitting him with a chair. In a rage he swiped at her, but missed and sent a kerosene lamp flying across the room, where it smashed apart on the floor and some embers the burned man had brought out of the fireplace with his face. The resulting blaze was enough of a distraction for her to bolt for the door. On her way out she grabbed a small wood carving her mother had made. It was of a protective spirit she had learned about as a little girl, and now seemed like a good time for any help available.

As she ran into the darkness, she looked back to see that the burned man had overpowered her father. There, backlit by the flames of her burning home, she saw him bite her father's neck, and her father fall limp to the floor. She ran as fast as she could, determined to survive. Even though she was a good runner and knew the forest well, she could hear the two men gaining on her. When she tried to leap over a creek her foot sunk into the soft soil at the steep edge of the bank, and she fell to her knees. She knew they were right behind her, and she clutched her mother's wood carving tightly as she waited for the end. But, there was silence. She turned to face the men, and saw them on the opposite bank, motionless. In the air directly over the stream floated a faint humanoid figure. It was vague, but she immediately recognized it as the spirit depicted in the carving she held. For what seemed like an eternity to her, all three of them silently stared at the ghostly figure. Then the two horrible men, looking as surprised as she was, turned and ran off. Aura relaxed and finally breathed again, and in a blink of her eyes the spirit was gone, as if it had never been there.

Not knowing what else to do, she cautiously returned to her home. No one was there, and house itself was in blazes. The family car had also caught fire, and her father's adjacent workshop was also starting to burn. Acting quickly, she recovered her father's longbow and his leather work gear from it before it became impassable. Then, for the remainder of the most miserable night of her life, she sat and waited for anyone to come. And cried.

Eventually emergency services did arrive, but by then there wasn't much for them to do. Police took her in, and she was assigned a Child Protective Services agent named Gwendolyn Post to help her find a new home. For the tumultuous period of her life that came next, she was taken in by her aunt and uncle that lived deeper in the forest with more of her extended family. Aura continued to have appointments with Ms. Post as well. She helped with medical checkups, legal proceedings, and also provided counseling to help Aura cope with her loss. What amazed Aura though, was that Ms. Post genuinely seemed to believe Aura's recollection of the attack even though officially the fire was determined to be an accident and there was no police action accordingly. Ms. Post even believed in the appearance of the spirit, once Aura had worked up the courage to tell her about it. Eventually she told Aura that she was sure magical things existed in this world, and that the two attackers were probably not men, but vampires. Finally, Ms. Post encouraged Aura to explore her power that summoned the spirit

With Ms. Post's help, Aura settled in to her new home comfortably, but eventually she decided she wanted to return to high school in town. The family of her best friend, Lithia, offered to let her stay in their house, and Aura graciously accepted. She continued to do well in school, and found it comforting to have something that was the same as before the incident.

In the summer she returned to her relatives in the Shurifon forest, and studied the legends of her people more closely. Then secretly, as Ms. Post had suggested, she began attempting to summon the spirit that had saved her. It took a great deal of focus, but with practice she found she could control it, and that it could even interact physically with the world. Its appearance had become more defined as she improved her control over it too. When summer ended she traded her spiritual studies for school studies, but she also began to follow the news more carefully. Specifically, she looked for stories of disappearances and murders not involving weapons. She found many. She began to notice patterns of when and where, too.

Her senior year of high school ended without incident, and she was even awarded scholarships to the city university, which she accepted. When she returned to the forest for the summer, her training took a new turn. She practiced her archery, and began testing her summoned spirit to see what kinds of combat ability it had. She also tailored her father's leather work gear into a snug protective suit.

A week before the start of university classes, a particular violent crime news story caught her attention. Three men had violently attacked and killed a gas station attendant, and a surveillance camera had gotten some footage of them before they destroyed it. She wasn't completely sure as the man's face didn't look horrible like it had that night, but she thought she recognized one of the men as the vampire that had tried to grab her before the fire started. The neighborhood the gas station was in was one of the major hotspots for violent crimes and disappearances too, so she figured the detour on the way to the University was worth it.

She fired up the dual-sport touring motorbike she had bought for transportation using some of her inheritance. As she kept so few belongings with her most everything fit in the saddlebags and in a pack on the luggage rack of the bike; only her father's bow didn't, so she rode with it strapped to her back as she headed for Los Diables. She didn't know exactly what to look for when she arrived, but it ended up being a non-issue. Most of the buildings were boarded up, and there was very little traffic. It seemed like no one wanted to be here unless they had to be. This was fine by Aura, as it made it much easier to keep track of everyone who came and went as she cruised the neighborhood on her bike.

She wasn't having any luck spotting her attacker, but she did spot a familiar face she never expected to encounter here. It was Ms. Post. "What on earth would she be doing here?" wondered Aura as she followed Ms. Post to yet another abandoned-looking building. Aura watched and waited for her to leave, then decided to sneak in and have a look...

Personality: Aura is rather mature for her age, and is very cool, collected and focused most of the time. When something surprises or embarrasses her, the cool exterior completely shatters, leaving her looking extremely befuddled or shy. Those that do not know her may think she is distant and hard to approach, but to her friends she is very open and caring. She enjoys rising to challenges, but will also admit defeat when she is bested.

Zodiac Symbol: She has a 2" wide birthmark that resembles the symbol of Cancer on her left shoulder blade.

    Spirit Companion:

    Buffy-verse PC (only) Thread Auraseikijin

Aura's spirit companion resembles a slender humanoid suit of armor. As it is a nature spirit, it is composed of wood, bark, and stone and is green, brown, black, and white in color. Its chest is a transparent sphere of water. Air currents keep it aloft, so it mostly hovers from place to place and rarely stands on its feet. It has decorative feathers on its helm, and a long tassel of silvery hair originating from the center of its upper back.

    Aura calls it the Seikijin.

    Wish List:

    Flameburst Longbow +2 [lvl 8]
Bear Spirit Leather Armor +2 [lvl 9]

Okay, I'll be Aquarius, Birthmark is the pouring vase, location is left breast.

Kenneday is the daughter of a wealthy family of bankers. She went to the finest private boarding school and her life was busy with all manner of scheduled activities. She learned to shoot at her father's private gun club, took foil fencing lessons, archery lessons from a retired olympic medalist, several martial arts, jazz dancing, gymnastics, music lessons and debate. There was rarely time for friends and most peers were viewed as opponents more than companions. She was better "friends" with Karla her driver and Yukari her martial arts instructor. Of all her many activities, Kenneday's favorites were volleyball and singing, both of which she did with unmatched passion. Although driven to personal excellence in numerous individual endevors by her parents, Kenneday discovered on the volleyball court that no matter how much of a star you are, you can't win without the rest of the team. By making her team mates the very best they could be in each of thier roles, her school achieved several years of state titles.

Among her many achievements; 1st Place Jr Div Highland Rifles 2009, voted Most Likely to Suceed Rallod High, Rallod High Class President, Girls State VB Championships 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011; Black Belt Okinawan Karate; Girl Scout Gold Award; Outstanding PeeWee Gymnast of 2004; cameo appearance on "I Carly" 2002.

    ...more to follow...

That, and it's a low magic campaign compared to all the others I've run. You can start with cash for PCs to help you craft items, but you'd only start with 1 of 11th or 12th level. (The baddies control the world and all the living have forgotten all about magic. As far as most know, magic is occult hocus pocus, much like in the real world.)

You'll also need to (eventually) choose one of the remaining Zodiac signs as a birthmark or childhood scar and decide where & how it is on your person. This doesn't have to be right away.

Oh, okay, I'll adjust my numbers.
Instead of a single 12th level item, do we have the option to take the GP value of a 12th level item and purchase multiple lower level items instead?

No. The point is that in the Buffyverse, the living aren't aware that magic exists (only the Vampires et al know this). Nobody can purchase a magic item, there are no magic stores since society disbelieves in magic's existence. The one powerful item you have is a family heirloom and thought to be mundane until you discovered otherwise. You've never seen another magic item and until you meet the other Slayers, you've never met anyone else who can cast magic. This is one of the biggest secrets of the Vampires, that and their very existence...

Stu, you'll probably want to take an 11th or 12th that you've already listed. Then put the rest on your wish list. You'll probably get 2-3 during the first encounter.

Since you're coming late we may already have found them before you get there...

    Also, you'll stand out...

No one walks around the city in plate armor.
The closest equivalent would be the heavy riot gear the police were wearing.

    Shields are also rarely seen.

With Angelus' build, this item is too powerful, as I believe its intent was to protect the unconscious and dying, not the superhero Angelus, mightiest of the Slayers. I'm going to say this item either doesn't exist in the Buffyverse, or, at your option, exists but instead of an ongoing property, it works 1x/encounter as an immediate interupt until the end of your next turn. Same daily power applies. Let me know if you still want the nerfed version or not and possibly a substitute waist slot item. Thanks, & sorry.

Angelus has been using the Heroic version since level 7. Has it been too powerful up til now?

Currently, with the heroic version, when below zero hitpoints he has resist 10 all. Without that he can't stay below zero for more than a round or two since he dies at -Bloodied.

The item scales with the expected damage of the monsters. It does reduce the amount of damage taken, but has monster levels increase so does their damage.

The whole point of the build is to be able to fight while below zero hit points.

The combination of the belt and Revenants "Unnatural Vitality" has been around for a couple of years and WotC hasn't errata'd it.

It is powerful, but so are some of the abilities of some of the other PCs...

I believe Angelus is using it as intended as there are several way to be below zero hitpoint and remain fighting. And no errata has come from WotC.

I'm not sure how it's too powerful as it's totally defensive in nature. There are also several ways around it...

How about leaving the item as is for now and just not handing it out the paragon/epic versions as treasure?

Since it's level 16 and uncommon a PC wouldn't be able to make it until 21st level. Once we get to 21st you can decide whether or not to allow it.

I'm still not sure how this is any more unbalancing than a PC that can evade being damaged (invisibility/interrupts) or one that has lesser resistance but a lot more hitpoints/surges (Jeff's PC from WAR).

    Also...

Is Stormhawk's Vengence "too" powerful (I took it at 16th)?

    Stormhawk's Vengeance
Benefit: If an enemy reduces you to 0 or fewer hit points with an attack, it takes 10 thunder damage. This damage increases to 20 at 11th level and 30 at 21st level.

ie, the Ranger in the last battle would have killed himself if he had attacked (and hit) Angelus...

@ Dwarmaj - re: Stormhawk's Vengenance - hmmm...doesn't seem any more powerful than some Marks that Defenders have where the monster takes some huge amount of Radiant damage each time they attack some PC other than the Defender...someone remind me what character class does this and what the damage is at 17th level (and can the damage be boosted with certain items and feats?).

Paladins have the mark that does radiant damage.

    Divine Challenge
You boldly confront a nearby enemy, searing it with divine light if it ignores your challenge.
    At-Will Divine, Radiant
    Minor Action Close burst 5
Target: One creature in the burst
Effect: You mark the target. The mark lasts until you use this power again. The mark also ends at the end of your turn if you didn’t engage the target, meaning you neither attacked it during your turn nor are adjacent to it at the end of your turn.
Until the mark ends, the target takes radiant damage the first time each round when it targets any of your allies with an attack power that doesn’t include you as a target. The damage equals 3 + your Charisma modifier.
Level 11: 6 + your Charisma modifier radiant damage
Level 21: 9 + your Charisma modifier radiant damage

Divine Sanction does the same damage but is usually applied via powers.

Ashe's mark does less than that since he is a hybrid Paladin but Divine Sanction functions the same as a normal Paladin. Most of the time the marks I use come from Divine Sanction rather than Divine Challenge. Ashe currently has a +8 CHA which is how he does 14 radiant damage per violation of the mark.

Might Challenge is a feat that will add my STR modifier to the damage (challenge only, not sanction) but I haven't taken that since I have no good way to force someone to disobey my mark.

The feat is different because it's giving out damage to NPCs which are built to go down anyway. Kind of a strawman. The belt is nixed at paragon level because it makes a PC too invulnerable. Way too few 'out of the box' monsters consistently do above 20 hits/attack. By comparison, the next waist item to grant resistence is three levels higher & says:

    Belt of Raging Endurance
Property: You gain 1 healing surge
Power: (Encounter) immediate interrupt. Trigger: An enemy hits you and causes damage. Effect: You gain resist 25 against that attack, but also take 15 damage at the end of your next turn.

20 resist all, all the time is many orders of magnitude out of line with this. Every superhero has to have his Krypton.

    Is the heroic version OK?

How about the paragon version in epic?

Also, it's not Resist 20 all the time. It only kicks in when Angelus is at 0 or below HP. Usually doesn't kick in until the 2nd or 3rd encounter.

I agree that the paragon version is powerful but so are a lot of other combos.

The item by itself isn't powerful, it's the combination of
Racal ability: Unnatural Vitality (become dazed instead of conscious until 1 failed death save)
Superior Will: to get rid of dazed
2 Feat/2 Items to get +7 to death saves
Paragon Path: to remain conscious indefinitely

Note: The build I used for Angelus isn't the most powerful of it's type.
Revanant (Shadar-kai) with an Epic Destiny of Raven Consort is. Even without the belt you have to do their full HP in damage in a single round to kill them. When below zero they can get surgeless healing almost every round if needed.

Hmmm...comparing the Belt of Ragine Endurance as a stand alone item visa vie Angelus' situation; is that a valid comparison. How many factors did Ken's PC have to align in order to cause the item to work as it does? Just throwing that out there...

Now that I carefully read Dwarmaj's post above, I'm stating the exact same thing. It's took five power/ item/ feat selections to combine to get to where we are...not just a single item.

Guys, the thing is this: I've built out many of the paragon as well as epic encounters already. I have nothing planned that can challenge that item, so the choices are: Openly say Angelus is on Godmode for the rest of the campaign, jack up the monsters & encounters to match Angelus which would likely overpower the rest of the Slayers, assasinate Angelus in a way that removes him from the campaign, or else nerf that item. What does everybody think is the simplest and fairest? Any other solutions?

And yes, thank you for not picking the most broken build you could find, but if the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc most broken also doesn't fit the campaign, then it doesn't fit the campaign either. If this isn't obvious, I'm at a loss as to why not... Remember, the same monsters that are fighting Angelus are also fighting Aura. Remember too the most fun encounters have some excitement in them. You help me write this for everyone if none of the PCs are outliers. This is more difficult otherwise.

Thanks, just needed an a reason other than "it's broken".

Though I don't think you'll be able to make a monster that Aura can stand up against that will still be a challenge to Angelus or a couple of other members of the party... (no offence to Aura...)

But in 4E, that's suppose to be ok. That's what defenders, controllers, and strikers are for. She only has to be able to take one or two hits and another member of the party will be there to help.

Taking our PCs out of it, it'll be hard to make monsters that won't kill a pure leader or controller that will still be a challange for a defender or striker.

Another alternative is to nerf it, like only allowing it to give resistance to all, with the exception of specific specific attacks, like Necrotic damage.

    That was his initial ruling...

I don't think having specific exceptions will work since I can always pick up resistances to those (I already have necrotic and cold resistance, only 5 now but could get higher). Also there are a couple of other items I can take that provide similar benefits...

The root of the problem as Brad pointed out is that he already has the monsters/encounters done.

There are some monsters that can slay Angelus with a single hit or take him totally out of the battle for multiple rounds. But they may not fit into his "story".

I guess my point is that if he's built his monsters to challenge or not kill Aura and not the entire party then it may already be too late.

He could always just say certain attacks by certain powers aren't effected by resistance, kind I like the way our stun negation doesn't work.

    Yes, but there are:
encounter interrupts that can avoid damage.
a feat that says you can reduce the damage take by an attack (not resistance so it'll work)
ways to burn a surge as a free action (I normally only use 3 surges per adventrue, if the belt is nerfed I'll probably have to use a few more).
a feat to become incorporeal, 1/2 damage.

The belt does make things easier, but there's lots of other stuff out there...

Having an 18th, 17th, 16th, and 16th in gold is the norm.

I remember Aura started with nothing and got a bow and a couple of other items after defeating a vampire.

When I created the character I used the normal rules to figure out how much gold and bought items.

If it's three items only then:
    Thunderbolt Greatbow +4 (18th level)
Deathcut Hide Armor +3 (15th level)
    Bracers of Archery (15th)

There's really nothing good for his PC that's 16th or 17th so he's basically loosing 60k in value by taking two 15ths. Sad

I'd like to switch PCs as I really think the party could use a defender and we've been playing these chars for the last year and a half.

Angelus plays like a striker/defender, but has no way to deter monsters from going after the leaders. A defender with a mark and other punishment features can do that. It would be much more efficient for the leaders to heal someone with more HP/surges than it is for them to heal themselves.

Ashe does that on occasion, but can't make it very often.

I've sent Brad a history and summary of the new PC. He hasn't said no, but hasn't said ok either...

Since I was planing on retiring Angelus, I was hoping to have the new PC have equivalent gp value in items. (at least that's what I currently have equipped on them). At a minimum though any new PC needs appropriate magic weapon/armor/neck items otherwise they'll have a hard time hitting anything or evading enemy attacks.

...or better yet, Angelus LOST HIS SOUL and became evil. Evil or Very Mad Razz
...oh wait, his name was "Angelus" wasn't it, not Angel.
He can still join the bad guys; that would be an interesting twist.
Maybe one of our Epic quests will be to find an old witch and try to infuse Angelus' soul back into his body after which he will have an aversion to fighting and become a priest. Alternately, one of our Epic quests could be to dust Angelus...(where's Spike when you need him?).
