    Power Durations... Empty Power Durations...

Post by Dwarmaj Mon Nov 26, 2012 10:20 am

A question came up during the last game as to what the duration of certain powers should be in in different scenarios.

I couldn't find a specific rule, but searches on the internet all say that a power remains in effect until the termination condition happens unless the power/power type specifically states otherwise.

    Examples:
    Under Conjuration:
"A conjuration ends immediately if its creator dies."

    Under Stance:
Duration: A stance lasts until the character assumes another stance or until the character falls unconscious or dies. A stance also ends at the end of the encounter, unless the stance can be assumed at will.

    Under Conditions Durations:
An effect that has a conditional duration lasts until a specific event occurs. Three conditional durations appear more than any other in the game.

Until the Start/End of Someone’s Next Turn: The effect ends when a specific creature’s next turn starts or ends. The creature is usually the one who produced the effect or else the target of the effect.

Until the End of the Encounter: The effect ends at the end of the current encounter or after 5 minutes, whichever comes first.

Save Ends: The effect ends when the target makes a successful saving throw against it. See “Saving Throws".

So it looks like unless specifically stated, effects last even if the caster dies.

The text for Mind Blade is:
    Mind Blade
    Battlemind Attack 15

You lash out with your weapon and channel a burst of pain into your enemy’s mind. Though the blow doesn’t connect, your foe collapses as it feels the weapon strike a vital area.

    Daily Psionic, Psychic, Weapon
    Standard Action Melee weapon

    Target: One creature

    Attack: Constitution vs. Will

Hit: The target falls unconscious (save ends).

Aftereffect: 10 + Constitution modifier psychic damage.

Miss: The target is dazed (save ends).

Yes, this goes back to the Marking discussion we recently had. The hill giant can swat you over the head, dazing you (save ends) and you can be dazed a really long time regardless if your ally killed the hill giant a split second after the giant dazed you. So some conditions, e.g. poison, wounded leg (immobile, slow), daze, on fire, etc. can endure long after the inflicter is dead.

There will be other conditions; like Marks, Stances, etc that end (if the text says so) when a certain event happens (the originator is dead).

So, I agree, unless the ending event has been met to end the condition, the condition will endure.
